Have been half thinking of replacing my first gen fire TV and have been wondering if this is better than the previous pendant version. Actually a bit miffed they didn't just include an Ethernet port - but they do include a clunky USB to Ethernet converter. I suppose that's OK.
I probably don't care about the Alexa part either - I suspect I would play with that for 5 minutes and never use it again.

I am mainly thinking this will have enough oomph to decode HEVC well, which the first gen will mostly do in KODI up to 720p but not above.

Wonder what the you shop freight would be....

Actually - just noticed - if you are quick - They are on a real special for a very short time

$89.99 instead of $119.99USD - So $30USD off!

Hello all! I am also interested in Fire TV and want to buy from Amazon. That looks like a real good deal. I'm not really interested in becoming a Prime member. Will this work if i update to the prime member free trial?

I've seen/read some reviews recently that strongly imply that the new version of the Fire TV is absolute junk for 4K and is dog slow when using PLEX in general. I've had an NVIDIA Shield since release in 2015 and it is still by far the best of it's kind. Sure, it is more expensive but you get what you pay for.

Just remember to cancel your free prime trial before it charges you.

I looked into this Cube after reading this thread, but in the end, despite needing to replace a gen 1 Fire TV, I and the rest of the family really have no interest in using Alexa so it's just not worth it.

Then I saw Amazon, as part of their Prime specials, also have the standard Fire TV for half price - US $35. While it's annoying having to pay extra to get the ethernet adapter, for US $50 plus YouShop shipping charges it's still a damn cheap option. Now I just have to remember to cancel my Prime trial in a month!

Greetings all

many thanks for the replies.

I am wondering is the Fire TV a better option than the cube?

Cheers

It depends what your use case is. The Fire Cube looks like an OK bit of kit. But personally I think I would spend the extra and get the Nvidia shield. It just looks more powerful and robust, and has a casting option that should work with NZ TV on demand. The Shield will definitely work well with Plex, which is what you state you want to do.

+1 for the Nvidia Shield. I've got one and use Plex with it - works incredibly well + fast.

Hi again,

Well I have certainly learnt some valuable facts, to be honest I had not even heard of the Nvidia Shield, did some googling and looks very impressive. Being a big Plex fan, great to hear that it works with Plex so well.

I am also a full on user of the echo Dot's voice capabilities. I do have a Google home, but have not really used it that much. From what I have researched regarding the Nvidia Shield, it is a very capable Google voice assistant device.

In the end, being lucky enough to have extra funds available at the moment, I have solved my difficulty choosing between the fire TV cube and Nvidia Shield,  by getting one of each!

Most definitely a geek I am (to speak Yoda–ish )

Then you run out of HDMI inputs and have to get a switch and then deal with the problem of all the fake "4k" stuff around. Fun being into tech so much.
