Hi Guys,

I've been thinking of getting an energy monitoring device to help reduce our usage at home.

I have found quite a few devices online but looking for some advice on them or even seeing one in action would be great.

This is the list so far:

Sense

Smappe

Efergy

Neurio

Eyedro EHEM1

My questions so far for each is:

Ability to store locally until wifi is on again (we turn wifi off at night)

Automatic device detection

Ability to turn devices off and on, even controlling hot water cylinder

History retention

App usability

Not exactly what you're after, but I have a couple of Xiaomi smart plugs that send power usage for a single socket back to my Home Assistant installation. Then I have a custom Home Assistant sensor that tells me exactly how much that socket is costing me by combining the power load and the current Flick spot price. Based on this I worked out that my workstation, which I leave running 24x7, is costing me at least $10 - $15 a month. I created a Home Assistant script to gracefully shutdown the workstation, and I use the Wake-on-LAN component to wake it back up if I need to access it remotely. Pretty neat solution for socket-level monitoring, but I'm also keen to extend this more widely across the whole house.

Have a look at Open Energy Monitor as well.

Ignore anything that is designed for USA as their electrical system is completely different to NZ.

And make sure that whatever you get can measure and compensate for power factors. Otherwise it will over read most electric motor and electronic device loads.
