Hi Team,

My trusty small (about 20cm long) portable speaker is on the brink. I was given it as a gift and never thought I'd use it, but far out I use that thing every day, it's brilliant.

So now I'm after a replacement. What would you recommend? I'm listening to a very wide range of music from drum and bass to classical and everything in between. I definitely want to hear the bass as much as possible from a small speaker, but don't want something that would be any bigger than say a 1.5l Coke bottle (new international unit of speaker measurement).

I got some wireless headphones (PX550's) and they are amazing.

Also have a MegaBoom and it’s good. Has lasted well for many years until just recently when the battery has died. Still works connected to AC. Phone app has lots of EQ settings for your preference.

JBL charge similar in size to the UE Boom but has more base due to having "passive radiators" on either end of speaker plus has larger battery so can be used as the name indicates to charge your phone etc.

Define "portable" :-). A friend of mine once demonstrated the portability of some Altec Lansing A7-500s's that he was given (!!!), you just need to own a ute.

Ive got an original JBL Charge, great little unit for the time, newer model is splash proof as well I think which is always handy.

Personally, if/when it comes time for replacement, I'll be looking at the UE units as the volume on them seems to be a lot better than my JBL (it does well tho) without getting distorted.

What's wrong with your old one, chances are you can fix it (replace batteries etc).

To answer your question the UE and Sony's are both very good. UE are expendy, but worth it!!

Given there are so many recommendations for the MegaBoom (and I'd be one of them - we've had two for a few years; especially like them in stereo mode), I thought it may be worth mentioning that 1day often has these (or the Boom) on special; often these are refurbished, but this is another option.

That said, you may prefer to get the new version of the MegaBoom, which is apparently louder; not sure what difference in the sound quality. UE's been good at upgrading the firmware of the older models, though, so they're kept pretty up-to-date.

(While the Boom is smaller and cheaper, personally I'd not recommend it - either if you want it to go decently loud, or are more fussy about the sound quality; while neither will win awards for amazing life-like reproduction, personally I find the Boom pretty much sounds like you'd expect from a small speaker, whereas the MegaBooom is far more substantial in volume and tone than it should for that size.)

Do any of you people with a UE Boom know how to turn off the remote power option? ie. turn speaker on and off remotely with the app. It kills my battery, and the option is no longer in the app.
