Just saw a tweet about this and I wonder if anyone has gone down the "more legal" DIY switches and outlets path of purchasing something from AU rather than China?

https://www.mitre10.com.au/arteor-trade-smart-starter-kit

Yes they are in Australia but in theory they should be able to supply a SDoC to make them legal in NZ.

Relatively pricey, but if your house burns down your insurance would probably cover you.

For that money I’d rather zwave, and the. I don’t have to use their faux techno switches that don’t match the rest of the house. Also zwave “mesh” is much more effective than zigbee. Though there are some repeating devices (normally powered ones)

Tend to agree about the "space age" look. What's wrong with taking the stealth approach?

What I'd really like is a wired-in replacement with a normal rocker switch (not push button) that can turn off Hue bulbs on/off without breaking the circuit.

Dimmer function optional and dependent on location. The main aim is to stop family/guests messing with my lights because you just can't stop 'em from using the wall switches.

Zigbee seems like a sensible decision for a mainstream product and compatibility with Hue and Echo Plus/Show.

Hue for a household isn't a great solution as you've identified, the lightbulb is independent from the switch.

Either make the switch smart (which means you've normally got a jetsons looking wall switch), or put something behind it, ie a zwave relay (these work well), a zigbee equivalent (if exists, I've not seen one), or start getting products like the shelly1, sonoff certified in nz as they can be loaded behind a switch and use wifi.

But Philips want you to buy more Hue lights.

One smart switch controlling three dumb bulbs isn't as good as three smart bulbs! 😀

Seriously though, what's stopping PDL making a 600 series switch with a Hue compatible zigbee controller built in?

Nothing, but they already have a zwave product - https://www.pdl.co.nz/Home-Owner/Products/Products/Smart-Home/Smart-Home-Solutions/Nero-by-Environexus   which is essentially rebadged aeotec gear (and really expensive in comparison)

Just imagine what shady shenanigans Google/Amazon/Facebook would be getting up to if they could read your thoughts!
