I'm looking for recommendations as to motorized venetian blinds.

We've had new windows installed, which means the existing blinds and curtains no longer fit. The northwest windows get lots of sun (the couch is being bleached pink) but also all the views. Personally, I would have just installed something to keep the sun off and left it closed but that option was not Mrs MDF-approved.

As a compromise, I have managed to get Mrs MDF to sign off on motorized venetian blinds with some kind of home automation / light sensor integration to keep the light out as required.

My home automation efforts to date have been somewhat haphazard. I've played around with mqtt, hass.io and openHAB on single board computers, and have some smart bulbs (LIFX) integrated directly in to Google Home. There are also random locks, central heaters, and RF odds and sods scattered about.

I'm therefore happy to take a clean slate approach and (if necessary) ditch/not integrate the existing stuff in favour of something that is (a) known to work well for motorized blinds and (b) is as open/expandable as possible so I can add other stuff as I go.

There is a convenient powerpoint to where the blinds will be located, and the gib is coming off that wall in the next six months, so would prefer something hardwired rather than batteries. Existing blinds no longer fit, so need to order new blinds anyway.

I've seen Somfy motors recommended for this on various sites and forums, but not sure about controllers/integration/open standards. As I need new blinds anyway, I'd probably rather get something with the motor built in rather than than fitting it myself though could do that if necessary.

I'm also open to recommendations as to the central controller / hub. I read the hubitat thread in this forum with interest and am definitely open to purchasing one of those.

You've not looked at what the blinds sellers can sell?  But they will be quite expensive and using whatever app they've manage to white label (and with the "security" to boot).

Not sure if you've seen this crowd: https://www.ismartwindow.co.nz/products.html  they seem to sell the motors etc.  I've not used them, given I have roman blinds so will probably have to build something.

Ta, though the aliX link is to a roller blind motor, not a venetian blind.

I should also have said I am very keen to avoid any kind of proprietary app or protocol that won't talk to anything else properly. Have been down that road before.

If you search through that aliexpress store page, you will prob find a Venetian blind motor as Dooya does make motors for them. In regards to controlling it, that is up to you as to which proprietary or non propreitary relay controller you use with the Dooya. Aeotec or Fibaro uses ZWave

I used Alan from Shoestring in Wellington to provide automation motors etc for my roller blinds, then added Z-wave controllers to them (to connect to my HA system) ... maybe worth contacting
