Hi there...is there anyone here that has experience with Hikvision NVR's? I feel like it should be difficult but im struggling..

Ive inherited a Hikvision NVR and am struggling to get the client software to show an image ....

The NVR is a DS-7608NI-I2 / 8P running V3.3.9 build 160804. The client software is iVMS-4200 and ive dowloaded version 2.8.2.2 form the HIK Vision support site.

Ive added the NVR in device management and all 8 cameras now show in the main view but im getting two different error messages.

Have I missed something simple?

What cameras are you using? The Hikvision ones I used to have can be logged in with an admin user or guest. The admin was able to restrict remote access to the camera and you may be running into this issue.

Thanks...you may be onto something here...

Ive just had a look at the Camera Management page on the NVR and see that the protocol sleected is HIKVISION but the username is set as admin... with an hidden and unknown password

The only username and password I've used so far is when I added the NVR as a device and imported the cameras to a group is the same username and password for logging onto the NVR. I have right clicked on the encoding channel and updated all the cameras names ok so assume I must be authenticating with the NVR ok.

If the iVMS software is connecting directly to each camera and not the NVR then I'd imagine the original user I setup in the software (same username and password as used to access the NVR gui) doesnt have the correct credentials...

Now I dig a little further and I wonder if the admin login I've been given is actually just a standard user login with no remote live viewing rights...

HIKVISION cameras.. yes I can login to the NVR but the user I'm logging in with only has the above permissions assigned and I'm unable to select or add any nerw permissions. Not using iPhone app.

I have a DS-7504N-E1 / 4P at home running v3.4.80 build 160716 firmware.

Maybe a bug?  Are you on the latest version for that model?

No I dont - do you think that is why I am getting the error because I have added the NVR to iVMS using a user account that doesnt have Remote Live Viewing permission?

Yes the user won't have the permission, you'll need to get into admin and add the permissions for the user
