Hi all,

Just a question as a quick search hasn't provided
me with any answer's as yet.

My mum in NZ has recently signed
up to a new Spark Fibre service but is
having problems connecting with her
landline phone the base unit works ok
but second unit is a bit dodgy.

Anyway I have suggested she look at another
home phone and was wondering what would be a good
solution for her. Didn't want to setup a VoIP phone
just plug in and go.

From what I have read here Panasonic seem popular

Thanks

so few questions to confirm.

  1. was integrated wiring done?
  2. was it an intact or new fibre service?
  3. where is her base unit plugged into.

As noted above, Spark deliver voice over the ONT itself.

Generally we encourage customers to have integrated wiring, it quite simply makes it easy. Especially for elderly folk. in their day, a phone jack was a phonejack and it would just work.

It gets alot more mudder these days with Voice over fibre, Voice over RGW's or Voice over ATA's.

Okay will try and explain the best I can as I'm in Australia. She has tried two phones both older wireless units and both have problems.
The base unit phone plugs into the Chorus box on the wall. Assuming you call that the ONT. Comes up on the screen with No Caller ID 30 I think the problem is. Pickup the cordless unit and has no dail tone and calls out.

Pickup the other unit no dailtone and doesn't ring out.

The back of the router has no port for the phone anyway just a DSL port
and Ethernet ports. Apparently when the Chorus installer came around he tried
the DSL port then plugged back into the ont.

Anyway wanted to try another phone now as the older units we have don't appear to be fully compatible with Fibre. Batteries are good on both phones as well

If one phone is working OK on the ONT and another isnt, then the problem isnt the chorus service.

I dont know if it applies to ONT based phone services, but an friends eldery parents had problems where their old cordless phone was set to pulse dial which didnt work on the router based voice service that they were purchasing. That did not occur to the ISPs helpdesk at all which just swapped the router out 2 times. I ended up being tech support since my friend has now left NZ.

I'm not sure why a tech would plug a dsl port into an ont....

sounds like you just need to swap the phones out though.

If they're older analog cordless phones, check the REN (ringer equivalence number), some of those things load the line down quite heavily which results in various functionality not functioning.

There is no such thing as a "fibre compatible phone".

Basically 99.9% of phones in NZ manufactured or sold after about 1985 when the NZPO moved to DTMF from pulse dialing will work with UFB.

As already mentioned the only thing to be aware of is the REN value which wouldn't apply based on your comments, but if you're plugging multiple corded phones into existing wiring you'll want to check the combined REN value (shown on the Telepermit sticker) doesn't exceed around 3 as you can get issues beyond this where phones won't ring.

As just mentioned REN value won't affect being able to originate calls. On mains powered cordless phones the ring detector just had to trigger the locally powered sounder in the base or handset. The ringing energy wasn't required to drive the speaker or bell in the phone.

OK so not going to worry about the old one any longer, mumsee has purchased another unit although second hand (KX-TG2723 Panny)

Will wait and see how that goes. There are 3 handsets but will probably only use two. Thanks for the assistance all ..... will report back next week.

Kind Regards
