I have seen the Dyson V7 rechargeable vacuum on sale for under $500 recently and was quite tempted - we have an old Dyson Barrel Vac and it's pretty cumbersome and has lost a bit of its oomph in recent months. I like the convenience factor of the newer cordless Dysons, but am not keen on the high cost...

I know we are up to the V11 now, but sub-$500 vs upwards of $1100 is quite a difference, so I want to know...apart from run time - what are the real-world disadvantages of going with a V7 over a V8 or V10?

We've got a V6. It has two settings, high and low. Even low works really well doing a few rooms on carpet; the beater brush in the carpet head works amazingly well. We don't really find the need to use high. It's great to just grab it, tidy up a mess, then put it away in about 1 minute. The battery won't do the full house on a single charge. I've found it a bit problematic on harder floors. The brush tends to fire stuff away. There is a hard floor head but we don't have that.

My Mum has a V10. It has low/high/super high modes. It does suck harder (especially on the higher modes), has a much bigger filth tank (inline rather than transverse on V10 and newer), and the battery seems to last a bit longer (though that might just be because it is newer).

But IMHO having used a V6 and V10, I don't think it is worth paying twice the price to get the V10. You are better off spending the money on the accessories you would actually use.

We have a V10 which we just bought recently. I can’t speak for the older models but I’m really impressed with the V10.

I don’t think it’s as good as a corded vacuum but the convenience means you use it more frequently so it doesn’t have to cope with heavily soiled carpets. It’s also easy to quickly run over high traffic areas whereas you feel compelled to vacuum the whole house every time you pull out a corded vacuum.

Go for it. You won’t be disappointed.

and has lost a bit of its oomph in recent months.

We have a DC8T barrel Vac bought in 2006. The old barrel Vac's have a top and bottom filter. The bottom filter is hepa for which you can still buy replacements for and the top filter is sponge like and can be washed and dried. There is also a rubber flap at the back of the head unit just before it enters the twisty neck and wand, this can get blocked. Plus the tubes in the cyclonic chamber can become blocked due to build up. (like arterial plaque) A good blow through with a high pressure hose can clear those.

We have replaced the filters once in its life and this machine still runs like it did the first day we bought it. I believe this has been due to good continued at home maintenance and cleaning.

Dyson now has its own presence in NZ as opposed to an agent.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

https://www.briscoes.co.nz/electrical/vacuum-cleaners/1066685/Electrolux-Ergorapido-Series-4-ZB3104-Vacuum-Ice-White.html

Just if you want to look at something different.

I have a lower model one then this one, works well.

Briscoes has them for $179.99 marked down from $399.99

The one I got was over $400 every where else and got for around $150 Briscoes.

Battery lasts 15 minutes high, and around 30 minutes low power. Also for parts Found Briscoes cheaper then Electrolux online.

I've owned an Ergorapido (well, two of them), plus have used the more expensive Ergorapido my parents had (before my mother decided to use it to suck up water). We now have a Dyson (V6), and it totally sucks compared to the Ergorapidos (and I mean that in a good way). I also find the design of the Dyson makes it easier to use, especially getting under furniture like beds etc.

One thing about Dysons is I don't think they're terribly well built (eg too much flex where the wand connects to the body), especially given their cost. Also, I'm pretty sure they deliberately designed them to be incredibly fiddly to empty! That said, overall happy with the purchase. Ours initially took over 90% of the use of our Miele corded machine; since then, our Roborock robot cleaner's taken over 90% of our usage of the Dyson, though the Dyson remains useful for spot cleaning.

I have the V6 Animal.  Use it daily for about 10 mins around the house.  Super powerful for what it is.  The battery is tragic though, any more than about 10 mins and I get cut off mid job.  The newer ones have much larger batteries, but if all you need to do is run around the house quickly every day then the cheaper one should be an excellent addition.

I've got a V6 Animal as well and it's great for the small clean up jobs I use it for. As mentioned, the default head that it comes with isn't the best on hard floors as it doesn't have enough clearance for anything more than dust but I ended up picking up the soft roller off eBay for those scenarios. I don't use it a whole lot these days since I picked up a Roomba i7+ so I mostly just use it for the spots the Roomba can't get to.

I understand that the batteries only last about 3 years before needing to be replaced.

I recently bought the V11 after looking at all the reviews etc. Decided that this model whilst very expensive was the best ever, and it certainly is. I did look at older models but decided against them, especially the V10 which didnt have a strong rating.

Got the v6 and it is brilliant, used daily for quick ad hoc cleans and does this very well. We still use a Miele for the weekly vacuum though, although we are considering getting the newer v11 to replace this. The only issue is using it on hard floors isn’t as good as the Miele pull along.
Previously had an ergorapido as mentioned above, but this was garbage compared to the Dyson. Was an older version of the one posted above, battery lost its charge after less than two years and I personally couldn’t recommend it.

Comments about ergorapido above noted.

I haven't had any experience with new Dysons Vacuums, but based on comments above when current vacuum gives up the ghost may give one a go.

I have a Dyson heat and cool purifier and love it, gives out hot air and seems lower risk of burning ones self when next to it. Only worry is they don't seem to make model I have anymore so hope can still get replacement filter. The new ones are more skinny at bottom.

The floor is spotless after ergorapido been used, but I guess the rotating brush does most pick up, just over 2 years old using once a week.

It won't pick up dirt if filters dirty so I clean them each time, replace paper one about every 6 months. And untangle stuff out of brush every so often.
