After some advice on how best to configure Amazon echo devices with a family.

Considering one for each of the kids as an alarm clock, thinking the new echo dot with a clock face display, or the echo show 5.

Wondering if it's better to set up individual accounts for them, or is it possible that we could each have one and use them individually on the same account.

Would be wanting to say things like turn on my alarm for tomorrow morning, or play from my spotify playlist etc, so wondering if fully separate is sensible.

Spotify wise the kids each have a free account, and we have the main pro account for our use.  Not looking to go pro for all of them and they don't seem to mind the ads and aren't looking to download music for offline use yet etc.

Longer term, might look to include some smart light bulbs in their rooms, so they can voice command those on or off etc.

New to this, so just wondering how one would go about this sort of setup?

Thanks.

Dont do it. Nothing to stop one kid saying "play allstar by smashmouth on kevins echo dot" - or if you get wifi lights, "alexa turn on mikes bedroom light" and similar things.

They have no clue on how to make a functioning family offering with controls over who can access what. Also family spotify is not a good thing on echos, with it all using one of the people unless you make everyone their own alexa account with their own spotify from the family plan.

Yeah that's what I thought the case might be.

Sounds like individual Amazon accounts and link to individual free spotify accounts for them.  Keep it all locked to a persons room, so they control their world and their world only, rather than a family approach.

I was looking at one for an alarm clock as well....but I wanted to pretty much permanently disable the microphone. As there doesn't seem to be a internet radio device with clock, that has no voice control.

Was intending to set up the alarm via app (to play iheart radio), or use openhab to control it.

I think there are a few products around - I still run a Squeezebox Radio as my clock radio, and there are models on Amazon that seem to be similar (in terms of internet radio; not necessarily the whole music server side of the Squeezebox), eg:

Can Amazon echo dot play from a free Spotify account, or does it have to be a Spotify pro account to do this?
