Our neighbour is preparing to put down a new concrete driveway right out to the street. Suggested to him that he put in ducting for fibre to connect our 2 properties (fibre due in the area this year).

Great idea he says but we are both unsure of what is required. Ok green duct but what size, depth and distance from power main etc?

Anyone any experience and suggestions?

Many thanks.

20mm Telecom green

400-600mm deep

Separation from power is not too big a deal - generally they are in the same trench, just on opposite sides, so maybe 200mm apart?

Use a white sweeping bend at the house end, and white conduit up to the ETP. The green is not UV stabilised.

Glue all the joints!

Edit: Oh and throw in a draw wire/string if you are feeling nice. No big deal if you don't.

Put in one for each property, its will cause fewer problems later on ,

( if you have a common tube, Chorus may get snippy and demand permissions etc from everyone involved,- obv. not a prob now, but owners change, and for the cost of some plastic its simply easier....)

If you live in Auckland it's the exact opposite, Chorus won't talk to you and it's incredibly difficult to get the ducting - places will advertise it, but you can't buy it when you contact them about it. We eventually got some from a trade supplier when we redid the driveway at the Casa de Cowboy.

Obvious but label each duct AND draw cord at street end loud and clear.

Have a look here for Chorus requirements: https://www.chorus.co.nz/help-and-support/digging/what-trenching

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

We are away down in the wops - Arrowtown.

Slightly off topic but about 2 years ago Chorus dug up half the length of our CBD footpath to install fibre to a single client.

It ran right next to a Council CCTV 100mm duct containing fibre but because it was not the correct colour they would not use it.

Sigh!

Hence the original questions.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I can confirm that QLDC tried everything they could and in fact wanted to put in another 30 meters of CCTV ducting in the Chorus trench.
Chorus said no!

I can to some extent see why they would do this, it's the same reason why, when your parents tell you they're getting a $1,000 brand-name thing, you don't tell them to get a $150 non-brand-name thing that does the same thing as the $1,000 one: Every single thing that goes wrong from then on will be your fault. Either something will go wrong with the QLDC cable and it's Chorus' fault, or something will go wrong with the Chorus cable and it's QLDC's fault.
