I have just bought a RPi4 with the sole purpose to run Kodi,  as I have 3b running Kodi and I thought the 4 would be a bit quicker with the 4gb model but have been a disappointed the sound doesn't work.  I searched but can't seem to find an easy fix.

Has anybody else resolved this if not might have find another use for my new pi4 any suggestions?

Have a look at https://libreelec.tv/ instead of installing it via the OS. For sound on the default Raspberry Pi OS you can configure this using “sudo raspi-config”

For the Pi 4, there are 2 micro HDMI Ports. Make sure that you connect to the port closest to the USB-C Port to get HDMI Sound. Had a similar issue

Buy a Xiaomi Mi Box. Since we got that I don't bother with Pi for our main media center, though we rarely use Kodi now, it's mostly Netflix and Disney. I still have a Pi for my second TV, I have one running Pi Hole for network wide ad blocking.

presently Kodi will perform better on a Pi 3 than a Pi 4.

There will be no hardware video decoding on the Pi 4 until Kodi 19 is released - which is still in alpha testing mode (so probably early 2021)

LibreELEC will do hardware decoding with the Pi4, main feature missing is HDR support.
