I sort of see from this post https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=73&topicid=247838 that it looks like google home will phone a number if set up? I read an article in  Google support says this is available in USA, Italy, Australia etc. I am keen to have this feature as my wife is partially disabled and would help her, but don't want to splurge out on a google home hardware unless it does work here in N.Z. Can someone confirm or any other suggestions?

I know that it can make a Duo call (without video obviously if you are calling from a non-video Google device).
Eg "call Peter" or "duo call Peter" places an audio duo call. Might be useful for you, might not. The home minis have been going down to only about $45 every couple of weeks so not too expensive to try one out.

I was thinking of more like " call doctor" or "call nurse"..

Will "DUO" require the other party to be "friends" or can it be the doctors surgery? Also I think the Doctors has one of those automated .. Press 1 for receptiom, 2 for Nurse etc . Does this take the app out of contention? How about Emergency (111) calls???

Thanks again for responses so far.

You can't use these for emergency calls.

Unlike the US where they are integrated with the standard telephone system with their Google Voice products, we don't have that option of associating your home device with your cellphone number and then using it as a standard phone. I don't really see Google spending any time on getting that working for free in New Zealand in the foreseeable future unless they are looking to make it a worldwide feature.

The only thing we can do in New Zealand is associate it with the Google Duo calling app, but that is limited to calling other people who use Google Duo. If you are routinely calling a limited number of people who will either receive these calls on their cellphones or Google Home devices then it could be useful, but it definitely isn't close to being a replacement for a standard phone. It's probably better to just have a dedicated android cellphone running Google Assistant in the always listening for keyword mode which you can then "Hey Google Call Peter" and it will make a standard cellphone call, possibly using a bluetooth speaker/mic setup for easier handsfree use.

OK, Thanks for your response. Was obviously hoping for better news on this, my son in oz uses google app to make calls and was hoping for something similar over here. Would make it much easier for my wife in not having to make sure she always had her cell phone with her in case of an emergency. Will keep looking at options mentioned.

Thanks again
