I really like the form factor of the Google Nest Hub and Lenovo Smart Display.

I am trying to figure out if is it possible to install any third party apps on these, or is it a more limited subset? All our home automation runs via Home Assistant and ideally I would like to install WallPanel.

Or do they only really work using Google's version of home automation?

what your looking at is a 100% locked down system.

for custom, look for lenovo android tablet with dock.

sdavisnz is correct in that it's a locked-down system that doesn't allow custom apps, but if all you're interested in is a Home Assistant interface on a Nest Hub, you could use home assistant cast, at https://cast.home-assistant.io/

I got a gen 2 Nest Hub and a Google Home Mini from the Warehouse the other day for $149 delivered - the Nest Hub is here, add a google mini for the bundle deal, and use the codes giveit-twl-5off50-20210505, giveit-twl-15off100-20210505 and FDREF93795 for $20 off and free shipping.

EDIT: JBhifi have the same $169 combo offer for Home Mini and 2nd Gen Nest Hub until the 12th, but without the $20 off of course.

You can use the Google Home interface to control your home stuff but it's a bit rudimentary: I use Home Assistant to expose everything to the Google Home app, so mostly just use voice to turn everything on and off, but can use the touchscreen instead if I need to.  Definitely not as good-looking as a well-setup HA interface, but it's workable - the main categories are "lights", "speakers and tvs", "routines" and "rooms", so if I select a room it has all the switches and lights etc I've assigned to it.
