So I clearly haven’t learnt about the dodgy WiFi on the Nest Hub Max, as despite problems with my own I’ve bought one for my mother... And this time I’m having a different WiFi problem.

This device sees my own networks (other than 5Ghz, as with my own device), and connects fine to these (had it running well at home - though it still can’t see my CC devices!). So I reset the device and try to connect it at my mother’s place, and it simply won’t see my mother’s WiFi network. Other devices are connecting fine to that WiFi under its current settings; I've tried entering the network details manually and that (unsurprisingly) doesn't work.

She's with Slingshot, and is using the standard Netcom router (a NF18?); are there any particular settings on this that could be behind the inability of the Hub to see and connect to the WiFi?

Any other options I should look at? Like is it worth setting up a spare HG659B I’ve got hanging around to see if I have any better luck with this?

We bought this so my mother can view photos and receive Duo calls, as she’s soon going to be moving to a rest home - I’d be very keen to sort this out before she does shift!

Thanks for any ideas.

As with my own Nest Home Max, they have terrible WiFi. I just factory-reset my own to experience this one again. My own device sees my 5GHz network but will refuse to connect to it.

If you've got a network with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz on the same SSID then ensure the 2.4GHz network is on bands 1,6 or 11 set with 20MHz bandwidth. Leave 5GHz on automatic configuration.

Don't have a Nest Hub but other devices have trouble with the DFS and higher bands. Other google users have had success with lower 5ghz bands.

See e.g. https://www.adamfowlerit.com/2020/01/google-nest-mini-wont-connect-to-5ghz-network/

I seem to recall reading somewhere that depending on where the device is manufactured they don’t like some of our channels. I would suggest playing around with manual channel selection on the router and work your way through the channels both wide and narrow, split the 2.4 and 5 GHz (have different SSID names) and connect it to the 2.4 band only. Good luck.

A belated thank you for the really useful replies.

It most certainly was the 2.4GHz channel issue at place here - the router had set itself to 12; switching it to 11 meant the Hub could see the network but still wouldn’t connect to it; changing it to 1 fixed that problem, so the device is now all connected and working, and my mother’s enjoying her photos and family calling her via Duo. Video a bit choppy sometimes but given she’s moving in a few weeks will see if it’s still an issue after that.

It’s so disappointing that a company as well-resourced as Google puts out an otherwise (mostly!) excellent product with such obvious flaws and doesn’t appear to be willing to fix them (or even be up-front about the problems and provide solutions). I can imagine there must be many people who buy these products who can’t navigate their way around fixing the install issues...

Anything over channel 11 is a total crapshoot with a lot of wifi gear. They only use 1-11 in the US so many devices simply don't bother looking any higher.

Along with causing issues like the one you've just had (which are always super annoying to troubleshoot, at least until you've been bitten once and know what to suspect), it means we can't use our full 2.4Ghz spectrum allocation effectively. We should be able to use 1, 5, 9, 13 for four non-overlapping 20Mhz channels. But because so much consumer gear doesn't support 12 and 13, we end up locked into using 1, 6 and 11 just like the US.

DFS causes its own issues with 5Ghz too. In theory there's a clear set of rules that a device can follow depending on the country code that is set. But in practice a lot of vendors seem to just declare the whole thing too hard and hard-code their devices not to use the DFS channels. Meaning sometimes channel 36 is the only foolproof place to sit on 5Ghz, despite a seemingly wide and clear open spectrum.
