Hi,

I'm looking to buy or build a "scanner head" that can be fitted to a cheap CNC router. It will be used to create a height map of the object in the work area, with sub-millimeter resolution if possible.

I vaguely recall having seen something like this in the past but I've searched and turned up nothing so far.

Can anyone recommend something or let me know what I should be looking for?

Glenn

A z-probe? I've only used these to establish the tool length compared to the bed surface though. I've seen (Youtube videos only) CNCs mills using a full-on stylus to probe the exact location and dimensions of the workpiece, but not for a CNC router.

Same result as  a z-probe but I was thinking non-contact, like laser or infrared, etc.

Beginning to think there's a good reason why I haven't found anything suitable.

Output distance resolution 1 mm, so doesn't quite meet the sub-millimetre spec.

Yes, something like that, but as you point out the the accuracy of those devices isn't all that great.

Similar sort of thing here https://www.adafruit.com/product/3317
