I know smart plugs all have schedules, but I'm looking for a (preferably plug-n-play, without too much messing around with the likes of IFTTT or external services) smart plug that will:

  • Sense when power is being used, and start a timer

  • Power off after a configurable "on delay"

  • Power back on after a configurable "off delay"

  • Bonus points if the device is IP54 or higher rated (maybe that's asking too much)

My use cases are these:

  • We have a dryer near the bedroom that we start at 9pm to take advantage of free power, but it has a crease guard function that can't be turned off. So often I'll go to bed and shortly after that the dryer finishes. But as I'm drifting off it suddenly starts up again for a few seconds and wakes me up, and will continue to do so until I go and manually switch it off.

  • My daughter uses far too much water in the shower. Instead of knocking and calling constantly after 15 minutes I'd like to be able to give her a limit, say 8-10 minutes after which the power to the gas hot water is shut off: gives her a few seconds to rinse off with hot water before it goes cold and encourages her to get out (and have a shorter shower next time)

Again, I'm looking for something that's relatively low cost and set-and-forget. I could buy a new dryer or spend a few hundred on a dedicated shower timer(!), I'm just wondering if there's a cheaper, easier solution out there that will solve both problems.

What eco system?  Apple, google, alexa etc?

I'm unsure of one out of the box that will do this, only because no-one can be across all of them.

But if it's in an eco system, ie apple = homekit, then you might be able to create an automation for "when switch turns one turn off about x mins".

Similar for the others if they have an assistant.  Short of that, you'll need to get your smart plug into something with more brains where you can make that automation, which in home assistant, openhab would be a doddle.......but that is way over board if you just have the one device.

Actually.   I have some Kogan smart plugs.   It’s about the only one I have the app for.   I just had a play and I think this might do what you’re after as a simple automation

while not ifttt it is using the internet.  But for $20 or so it might be an option  for you.

Sorry, yeah I didn't include much info because we don't have much automation stuff yet, but we're a Google/Android home with a Nest Hub. I also have an old Hue Hub lying around, though I'm not even sure if they are relevant any more.

Yes, this might very well do what I need - thank you! Does it actually trigger the timer based on when power is used, or just when power is applied? It's hard to tell from the screenshot.

I'd still like to hear from others, particularly if there's an IP-rated model, as I'd like to add one to the Rinnai outside as well.

That automation was triggered on use of the switch.

It could also trigger off power usage or other conditions.
