Hi,

My wife just bought an ipod nano 8GB, while in Australia (much cheaper than in NZ!), and we want to start to put songs on it.
Do you have to use only i-tunes to download songs to put them on the ipod, or can you just copy / rip songs from a CD and put them on - or can you use songs that have already been downloaded on to your PC and put them on?

any help would be much appreciated!

I could be wrong.
I have an Iphone and I think Itunes is the only way to add songs.You can certainly use songs you already have in your Music library.Point you Itunes to where they all are.You can use it to rip from your CD's too

Just be aware that when people talk about using Itunes to load your music onto a iPod, they are talking about the free software downloadable from Apple, *not* the online music store.( unfortunately they both call themselves itunes, and it can be a little confusing)

Also how much cheaper was the nano than in NZ?
Looking at the list prices of $199 AUD and $249 NZD, when you convert the currencies you get within $10 NZD difference.

To breakdown iTunes music functionality, you can get music onto your iPod several ways...

1. Purchase tracks and albums from the iTunes Store (shown in the left-hand navigation bar). This will require an iTunes account which is free.

2. Import existing tracks from elsewhere on your PC. Do this by going "File" menu -> "Add Folder to Library". Navigate to the folder where your music is stored and click "OK". Depending on your library settings, the tracks will be copied across and be listed in your library. If your tracks are in a non-supported format like WMA, they should be converted to whatever default format you've set up in your Preferences.

3. Ripping CDs in iTunes, this may be of help: iTunes 101 (note: this is for a previous version of iTunes and some options/controls have been moved since).

Note: Before you do anything with your library, it is best to have it set up how you want (e.g. where the files are stored). This way, you won't need to mess around unnecessarily in the future.

There are alternatives to iTunes available (e.g. Songbird, SharePod, etc.) and iLounge is usually a good site for getting comparisons. For me, I don't have any problems with iTunes and it is designed to work with the hardware, so I'm not massively sold on using third-party software.
