I am able to back up to DVD-Roms but they of course cost money.

I've a 300GB external hard drive I'd like to back it up to instead to that - but can't change the back-up from copying to a Disc.

Is it "do-able"?.

No worries if it isn't, just don't want to keep wasting my time trying to find out if it is.

All you need to do is copy your iTunes folder to the drive: The library information is stored in the iTunes Library.xml file so if you ever need to copy it back you just need to tell iTunes where to find the folder and it will do the rest.
