This justifies my reason behind not going down the Hue path. But it’s disappointing nonetheless.

Big "nope" from me. My Hue stuff is not connected to the Internet, and I use my own home-made automation app instead of the official one. I guess it's possible that a future bridge firmware update may break things, but at this point I have no intention of installing such a thing.

Hmmm, whats more secure?

Having your device accessible to the outside internet, 'us' so we can send a shutdown code when 'we' feel its best for your security.
Problem solved we bricked it for you.

From the land of planned obsolescence to you, just buy a new one, then another new one and be a good little consumer?
