He anyone ever managed to purchase these successfully through the iTunes NZ website?

Have got the account, got iTunes installed, get all the way through choosing the v alue etc etc etc ... and after agreeing to ding the Credit Card get a message of:

"This account is not currently eligible to purchase Gift Certificates.  However, you can purchase iTunes Gift Cards from the Apple Online Store or in Apple Retail stores".

Ughhhh damn stupid system!!

FAQ Seems to suggest it shold all be possible:

Where can I buy an iTunes Gift Card?

iTunes Gift Cards are not currently available for purchase in New Zealand.

What can I buy with an iTunes Gift Certificate?

iTunes Gift Certificates can be used to purchase music, music videos, movies, apps, and more from the iTunes Store. At this time, iTunes Gift Certificates are not accepted for online Apple Store purchases.

How do I redeem an iTunes Gift Certificate?

To redeem a gift certificate, launch iTunes. Click on the iTunes Store icon in the Source list. Then, click Redeem under QUICK LINKS in the upper right hand column. Or, click the link below. We'll launch iTunes and take you directly to the right page.

Read what I wrote and you will note I'm NOT buying a Gift Card, rather the Gift Certificates... two very different things!

Having never bought either, but from what I've read the card is purchased at retail stores (none of which are available in NZ) and you then redem the value of the card (I presume by some code on the card) at the Apple iTunes store, similar to a prepay phone card.
The Gift Certificates can be purchased online and then Emailed to the recipient, or even printed out on your own computer

Yep, I buy them regularly, saves having many small credit card charges from buying individual songs/apps.

Haven't bought one this year yet though, so not sure if it's a wider issue than just you :)

Got this lovely reply :)

Hello ####,

Thank you for contacting us, my name is Jhoanne and I hope you are having a good day so far. I read your email and I understand that you have been unable to purchase iTunes Gift Certificates with your "####" account. I can certainly see how this could be more than a little frustrating and I'm so sorry for that. I want you to know, I'm here to look into this and provide you with as much information as I can.

I checked our data base and I am very sorry, but it appears that this account is not currently eligible for iTunes Gift Certificate purchases. I believe this is in compliance with preventing fraud on your credit card, but we cannot change this information on our end, nor can you change it on your account. You can, however, buy songs, albums, videos, and audiobooks and send them to anyone who has a valid email address. iTunes delivers your gift by email to either just one person or a group of people.

If this interests you and you want to send someone an iTunes gift, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes first. You can download it free of charge from the iTunes website:

http://www.itunes.com/download

Next, follow the instructions in this article to send your gift:

Sending an iTunes gift in the iTunes Store
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2687

Your iTunes gift will be sent to your recipient via email, so make sure you carefully check the recipient's email address. Your recipient will need to have a computer capable of using iTunes 7 or later and an iTunes account in the same country as you.

The iTunes gift will be charged to your account. If you do not have a payment form listed on your account, you will be unable to purchase an iTunes Gift. Store credit cannot be used to purchase a gift.

Thank you for choosing iTunes as your source for entertainment. Please feel free to contact me again ####, if you have other questions or concerns regarding your account or purchases. I am only an email away.

Sincerely yours,

Jhoanne
iTunes Store Customer Support
Please note I work:
Sunday- 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM EST
Monday- 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM EST
Tuesday- 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM EST
Wednesday- 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM EST
Thursday- 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM EST
Friday- OFF
Saturday- OFF

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you. You may receive an AppleCare survey email; any feedback you provide would be greatly appreciated.

So the inference is that if I was able to purchase a Gift Cert this would open my card up to fraud! :)  But they are quite happy to hold my card details on file! :)
