I am wondering whether a TAPO smart wifi plug can act as a warning device that the power socket it is connected to is no longer on/live.

ie something else notices that it has gone missing and sends me a notification via txt or email.

Can Google Home notify when one of its devices cannot be reached?

if i understand you correctly, that would require the smart plug to have a battery - to have power to send the notification out.

google home is aware if any of the devices has gone offline, but i don't know if it can be set to send notifications for that reason.

Almost, I dont expect the Tapo to send anything, as you say, it would need an independent power source.

But I know they are compatible with Google Home, and I have a few nest hubs, so that is already set up.

So specifically asking if Google Home can send notifications. I have some devices offline already but I've not managed to find a way to get GH to tell me of its own accord so I dont have to manually check.

Or is there something else that can do the alerting? What does a TAPO hub do?

If it has an IP you can use PRTG to monitor its up/down status with a ping

I dont know about the tapo ones, but for tuya based stuff you can have the app alert if devices are offline for a length of time.

Am only a very basic user of the Tapo plugs which I have linked to Alexa.

You can certainly go into the app and it will tell you if a plug is on/off or offline (no power) but at a glance can't see anything in the app that looks like it can trigger an alert for a status change.

Can you use a Google home script to notify you when the device is offline?

You could do this with Home Assistant by simply checking if the device is online or not. You would need some sort of backup power for your Home Assistant and network devices - and if you were not home, a backup internet connection too.

I use Tapo cameras for monitoring a shed.  Unless something has changed, there is no alert that a device is offline.  It's a popular feature request that has had no attention from the developers so far.

I have a combination of current measurement, door opener contact and temperature measurement down in the cellar for my game freezer, which you rarely have in view. If anything unusual happens there, there is an evaluation via Home Assistant and a corresponding notification (visual, acoustic and via email).

The freezer maintains the temperature for up to 36 hours, enough time to react if necessary.

I use Sonoff S26R1 smart plugs from Aliexpress. They have a setting that enables offline alert to your phone. It's activated if the plug goes offline for 5 minutes. So, just a plug and an app (eWeLink), no need for Google or HA.
