I have an 11 year old Lenovo laptop - which functions fine except the battery is so dead it causes issues.

I have tried to purchase 2 batteries from local suppliers, both shipped to me quickly but due to age the batteries had less than 1/2 the life left.

Managed to get refunds to both thankfully.

Where can I find a reputable supplier?

Gunshy about Ali due to concerns about the above happening - shipping old and degraded stock.

I believe these guys are the authorised agent for Lenovo parts.

Computer Parts Online In New Zealand - EMPR New Zealand

While I don't have any deep industry knowledge about laptop battery supply, I think it would be unlikely anybody has manufactured new batteries for an 11 year old laptop in at least the last 5 years and perhaps longer.  The demand for batteries for a 6 year old laptop would be low, and the demand for batteries for a 10 year old laptop would be pretty close to zero.

If your laptop is old enough that it has an end-user-swappable battery pack that is probably made up of individual cells, a battery repacking company may be able to help.  Consider Googling battery repack nz and make sone inquiries.

Ah yes - I did find these guys, however the battery was about $315, which for such an old machine felt a bit rich:

Really what I am trying to achieve is to stop it randomly turning off, even when connected to power, which from some aggressive googling I believe is a symptom of a truly degraded battery.

I'll have a look for batter repackers, though this is a weird flat square one, but you never know.

For old laptop batteries I have had good sucess (and good prices) with the Auckland company https://www.raytech.co.nz

If you can't find a replacement battery maybe consider having your dead battery repacked with fresh cells by Simpower, I have used them several times - www.simpower.co.nz

I'd suggest removing the battery and see if the problem of randomly turning off goes away.  While there is a strong possibility that it is the battery, there may be something else that is degraded in the machine.

If the reliability improves, you could possibly not use the laptop battery and simply use a small UPS.  I've run several different laptops for long periods with no battery connected and never heard of or noticed any concerns or issues with this approach.

If this is the case, I suggest removing the battery entirely. And disposing of it safely (not in the kerbside rubbish bin).

For an 11 year old laptop, thats actually pretty darn good considering they probably don't make that particular battery anymore.

Put into context with a car......   you want parts for your classic model T Ford. Prepare to pay for them.....

I've hit up two battery repackers - again in the low hundreds, which I could get a second hand machine for.

I have already taken the battery out - I replaced it with two others I ordered, and thats how I know they had 1/2 the stated capacity.

When they get this low I think the BMS can't handle it, the battery isn't swollen or anything.

I'm going to try a last ditch attempt from Ali, and then I think I may have to bin it. Pity to waste it, as from a functional point of view it still works pretty well (running ChromeOS flex - not windows any more).

Before there are comments - I tried it with the new batteries in both windows and chrome os - wndows battery report was what gave me the actual data export proving how low the capacity was.
