Just announced that over 100 Countries would be able to buy the Amazon Kindle as well as buy content from the Amazon Book Store.

These countries include; Zambia, Belarus, Ukraine, Haiti, Rwanda, Niue, Mongolia, Fiji...

BUT NOT NEW ZEALAND??????

Just speculating here but could someone like Whitcoulls have the power and resources to keep the Kindle away from NZ? (officially, at least)

My theory? New Zealand is big enough that they can't release the Kindle here without reaching an agreement with local book distributors, but the market is too small for them to bother negotiating (in this first round at least).

I'm pretty sure it's the same reason a large number of games on Steam are unavailable in this country, fictionwise.com recently changed so I can't buy half the e-books in their catalogue, emusic.com blocks downloads of anything on a major label and things like Spotify are not available here.

Not true. Fiji can get it and there is no deal there. They make it work so that when you plug it in via USB it syncs with all other ebooks.

Wrong, many of the countries that do the Kindle do not have wireless service.

Amazon states that you must sync with a computer.

Nope. They rest of the world apparently has to roam to AT&T to download the books. Who in NZ is AT&Ts roaming partner..??

It's only the 6" version that is being sold worldwide . I may be more interested in the 9.7" version that is USA only.

I'm going to pick one up maybe for Xmas over here in the UK. By the time I'm back in NZ Voda should have the rights which means I can continue using it.
