Apple has introduced a new Ipod, I think it completely replaces the Ipod mini. The nano is available in 2gb and 4gb and is available now in the US. Im not sure when its available in NZ, but Im sure some shrewd parallel importer will bring them into NZ early ;-)

The Nano is basically smaller than the mini, has a hard disk storage system, a color menu, utilises apple click wheel, can hold photo files and works with Itunes. It will be available in white or black, 2gb or 4gb.

Might be worth waiting for if your thinking of purchasing a Ipod ?

So, it is indeed a hard disk based device? I thought it was flash based, and there was no information on this on the apple.com site or the press release.

Not that it makes much difference - I don't have an Apple iPod (I do have a Creative Portable Media Center and a Creative Muvo though).

My bad, the nano is actually flash based, I just assumed it would be hard disk given the cost/4gb model ... even better :-)

also,

- 80% smaller in volume than the original iPod. 1.5 ounces
- 1/2 the thickness of the iPod mini
- Supports the dock connector
- 14 hour rechargeable battery

The biggest problem with the iPod Mini is that the hard drive is vulnerable if the unit is battered and bruised. Sure, these things are well built, but they also tend to get a very hard life.

For this reason alone, I think that the iPod Nano will be a big seller.

I have a 60GB Photo, but will probably buy a Nano to serve as my real 'portable' player, the 60GB almost exclusively lives in either the car, or docked to my home theatre.

yer, apple is selling them for $349 and $419 ... they are pretty expensive I guess when the RRP for the 20gb verion is about $500 ... the nanos do look great though, I read they are a similar size to about 4 credit cards put together. Like you, I'll get one as my 60gb is permantly attached to my home theatre system.
