I have been using the Airplay for quite some time now, and still love it. In Gisborne I have to be on a fairly high frequency (something unused above 96/97fm) and in Hawkes Bay lower seems better (around 95ish or lower yields good results).
I would buy the Airplay again in a heartbeat if i lost it.
There was a thread about this a while ago. To recap, I have the original Belkin Tunecast which works okay at home or while driving out of town, but it's hopeless when driving in the city because it only supports frequencies in the range 88.1MHz - 88.7MHz and this range tends to get flooded out by low-power non-commercial radio stations.
The Belkin Tunecast II, along with many other modern alternatives, allows you to choose any frequency on the FM band, so I suspect that these may work better as long as you're willing to experiment to find the best transmission frequency.
I have a Griffin iTrip. Its good for what it is. I have it broadcast on 90.1 fm and the sound quality is good.
However, you can definitely tell the difference between listening to music broadcast through iTrip and a CD playing in that system. If you can connect your iPod directly to your stereo or car via a line in or something then definitely do that for good quality sound. Otherwise an FM transmitter is OK.
