So i found this REALLY cool software that you can download free (trial version, but it still works like a charm), or purchase for $50.00NZ.
I absolutely LOVE movies, and since i just upgraded my iPod I've been searching for an age to find a programme that will put my DVDs onto my iPod in mp4 format. There is only one set back... there is an annoying watermark in the middle of the screen saying "Trail version", this only appears if you are using the trail version.
It is a really sneaky way around purchasing movies on iTunes or downloading/torrenting movies loaded with viruses. Here's the website if anyone is interested, it will work on most DVDs(about 99%) and you can also rip your "home video's" onto your iPod. Here's the link if anyone is interested. To translate the above, try using Handbrake. It's free and it does the same thing.

Although more complex to use im sure.. Getting good results out of handbrake can be a nightmare

A note tough... These software can only legally be used in New Zealand to rip your own home made DVDs. Format shift of commercial DVDs is still not allowed in New Zealand - only audio CDs fall under the format shift allowed.

If you haven't tried it recently you might want to have another look, they simplified the UI a bit, although the "quality" settings are still largely relative to the original source and hence a bit cryptic.

Generally though, specify the input and output, set it to H264 with stereo-downmix audio, give it an output bitrate/filesize and hit "Start" and you get a good file every time.

Another good free one is DVDFabDecryptor (Windows only). They've got a paid version which does all sorts of goodness, but the free version does everything most folks will ever want.

As Mauricio says though, unfortunately the legality of it is still pretty dicey. Some disks are starting to appear with video files of the movies on them - albeit mostly heavily DRM'd but better than nothing.

No, it's worse than nothing since it is taking away valuable space that the movie I want to watch could have used, its a useless file in 5 years time when whatever DRM service they use has died, and it means that a limited use file becomes more acceptable to the general public.

No, the PC readable disc is separate from the movie. I think this is because it really is a very large two files (one for Windows, one for Mac). Personally, I'm more intrigued by Disney's approach. The Bluray disc comes with the DVD in the same case at no extra charge.

If you want something really easy to use, http://www.videora.com/ does free video converters that don't require any fiddling around - you just choose what type of iPod (or myriad other portable video players) you have and it does it all for you.

Big downside is that it's ad-ware, so expect lots of annoying adverts flashing up - even on the install screen!
