In theory, if it doesn't show any signs of life when you connect it to your Mac, then that would suggest that the battery may not be at fault.

Try this:
- Connect the iPod to a firewire port on your Mac.
- Hold down the play and menu buttons for ten seconds.
- When you see the Apple logo, press and hold the previous and next buttons for ten seconds, at which point the firewire logo should appear.

depends if the cable connection bypasses the battery top provide power directly, or whether it just powers the battery charging circuit??

I had that problem once on my fourth generation Ipod. Even with the charger or firewire plugged in it would not respond or power up.

Holding down the play and menu buttons for ten seconds worked for me.
