Does anyone know if standard USB to AC power adapters work safely with the Kindle?

If the Kindle charges from the USB on a PC, I can't see why not...

Me neither, but then I don't know the specific charging requirements for a Kindle. I'd hate to kill my battery through charging too fast.

I've been doing a lot of googling into this (hard to find good answers because of course every US resident that orders a Kindle by default has a charger shipped with theirs so doesn't have to use an iPhone/iPod charger unless they are trying to travel light with one fewer charger) and I have heard heaps of reports that it does NOT work?

Something about the Kindle being rated 4.9V and 0.85A while the iPod/iPhone Apple charger is 5.0V and 1A?

Apparently you plug it in and it becomes very sluggish in response, and it doesn't actually charge??

These are two images showing the charging light and the charging symbol working whilst plugged into the ipod touch charger which is rated at 5V 1A

I'm not sure how well it works to be honest as i've only had to charge the device once since i got it so it could easily not actually work. When i plugged the Kindle into the charger to take the images it told me i needed to charge the device so will give it an hour or two and see if it gets any charge and report back with a proper answer.

UPDATE: Seems to be charging fine for me. Will leave it overnight and see how it is in the morning. No signs of sluggishness either.

Yesterday received the Kindle that I ordered for my wife. (BTW I ordered it last Thursday afternoon and DHL delivered it in Auckland at 9.00 am yesterday/Monday. Pretty impressive).

It came with only a micro USB charging cable so I plugged the AC/mains micro USB charger that came with my Galaxy S phone and it charged the Kindle in about an hour.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Yeah i can confirm that the ipod touch charger i have has worked fine. All running and ready to roll.

On the sluggishness i am running the beta firmware so wonder if that might help?

I can also confirm that it charges ok with the HTC micro USB adapter & cable. Since I've never had a Kindle before I guess I'll never know if doing this damages the battery over time or not ;)

It annoys me that Australian residents get the option to buy an AC charger for USD$5 when they order their Kindles. Doesn't Amazon know those same chargers work in New Zealand? Aussies whinge at paying that extra fee when US residents get their power cable/adapter free but - sheesh - I would have paid the money if Amazon had let me.

Seems the current offering is $9.99 USD for Australia but ALSO New Zealand? I didn't notice it when ordering (only after I looked into this thread) and I'm a little annoyed I didn't add one. Does cost another $7 USD or so to ship it though!

To buy one is USD$19.99 + shipping.

The promo offer (which is new) gives $10 off the price of a power adapter if its purchased at the same time as the Kindle.

Pure ripoff.

Yep sorry that's what I meant - but it didn't flash up as a "do you want to add this for $9.99 usually $19.99?" when I ordered. Which is a pain.

But now I'm thinking about ordering one with a lighted cover.... is the lighted cover really really worth $100?????

Also what colour one do you have? :)

I love my lighted cover. It makes the Kindle twice as thick and a little heavier but it also lets me read in bed with no other lights on. Somehow it also makes the Kindle feel more like a book. The cover can bend backwards & lay flat, so using the Kindle one-handed is easy. Having the light in the cover itself means theres a light permanently with the Kindle - you never know when you might read at dusk or in a darkish room.

I got the orange one which is a much deeper colour than the pictures on Amazon show. It's closer to a deep rusty colour - a bit like an orange thats been left to dry up and darken ;)

The cover is expensive, but protects the Kindle really well so its been worth it for me.

Upon your recommendation I bought a blardy friggin expensive lighted cover.

I really can't believe how expensive it is!!!

Reading all the reviews of the cover, it seems to be universally loved, and simultaneously universally loathed for its price - by those who love it!

I was going to get black but your post made me rethink and I ended up getting Orange haha :D
