Hi

I'm looking for a VPN recommendation so I can purchase US ebooks from the Kindle store. I did have a US address, and that worked for a while, but recently Amazon emailed me and said my IP address is not from the US, and I can no longer purchase Kindle books.

Thanks. I'm guessing that I need to make the purchase on my notebook since I can't see  a way to get the VPN to work from my Kindle or iPad... How does this affect the delivery to the Kindle?

Correct, it will install a PPTP client and you will need to use your laptop.

Would you please explain what VPN and PPTP means?  I was on the verge of ordering a Kindle and planned to buy books using the gift certificate method previously explained on this forum.  This latest post seems to blow that idea out of the water, but I don't understand what is now being advised as a way around the problem of Amazon not accepting a NZ IP address.

A VPN acts like an internet tunnel. It will take all of your internet traffic and send it to an (usually) overseas server which will then forward any requests you've made to the relevant websites.

Think of it as a fancy, realtime PO box.

This way the website you contact will, for all intents and purposes, think you are browsing from the international IP address rather than a NZ one.

Applying this to the problem at hand; if you open an account with a VPN provider they will allow you to forward your web traffic through their international servers and when browsing to Amazon you will appear to originate from the USA (assuming a .us server, ofc) and thus have access to the US Kindle store.

Anything you purchase from the Amazon store while on your laptop can be automatically sent to your Kindle (assuming it is connected to Wi-Fi or 3G) as soon as the payment is processed.

I personally use alwaysvpn (https://ssl.alwaysvpn.com/) for my ebook purchasing needs. If all you're using it for is to purchase ebooks, 5GB will last a LONG time, and will only cost a one-off payment of 8.50 USD.

I buy my ebooks from Barnes & Noble this way.

Thanks so much for such a clear explanation to this non-geek.  I reckon this will also work for my problem with access to audible books "not available in my geographical zone".
