I have a family member who has just had their cochlear implant switched on on Tuesday, and after 40 years can hear. He has been using my iPod video tonight, and wants to buy an MP3 player for himself.

He has very bad eyesight, so screen brightness and readability is an issue. The 60GB Ipod Screen is great, but the player is overkill for him, I am thinking a Nano might be the next best option, unless someone can come up with a Mp3 player with a better screen and a VERY EASY TO USE interface.

I have searched and dont think anything really stacks up, especially for a very non-technical person...

Any ideas?

What about the Toshiba Gigabeat P5? It seems to be a reasonable priced small player...

The font on the Nano might be a little small.
but the screen is bright and clear.

MP3 for special person is a field totally forgotten by us before!
Wish there would be a MP3 which has zoom function and voice-instruction for your relative!

We went to Harvey Norman in Hastings, from whom I usually get exemplary service.

A girl I hadnt really dealt with before was the only salesperson free. She did her best to ignore us (after actually seeing me and walking away without saying anything), I had to walk to other side of store to say "can you help us".

The MP3 players are no longer setup on a security stand with working models, they were all locked in a case, and not plugged in. I said "we want to buy an ipod nano, but i need to make sure he can read the screen". She gave me the display one - it was flat. I said "its flat", and she said (in a snotty tone) "our customers make them go flat"

No shift sherlock!!!

She then gave him an ipod video and I said "no, we want  a nano, not interested in a video", she said "they are the same". I then gave a her a quick re-education.

I asked her to plug the nano in, so we could see it running, and that seeing it running was an absolute pre-requisite to buying one.

She refused - flat out. Said "No." with no further explanation.

I said "well I am not going to buy one here then"

And she said..........

"O.K."

We then went to DSE, their display one was flat, the happily plugged it in for us, it was just right for my relative, and we bought one (1GB) and some accessories right there and then.

I have this thing about bad customer service and my wife think it's funny: if I go to a store and don't like their service, I don't go there again - not only for that one product, but ever again.

Harvey Norman probably does not a good "incentive" policy. Or this person is simply not tailored for customer contact. What a shame you had bad luck, but great you could find an alternative around.

ah.. you mean the store called "Hardly Normals". I've always found the staff bizarre and seldom helpful, and never knowledgable.

Freitasm: to be fair, you may encournter a trainee on your first visit, that isn't going to be staying on the pay roll long. I'd give a store a second chance.

Here in China we have a very popular saying for the saleworkers at different kinds of shops :"If you don't work hard today, you will have to try hard for a job tomorrow!"

LOL theres a good idea, write their boss and tell them how you could do their job much better. Add in a gross negligence complaint to ensure an instant dismissal is in the bosses arsenal, then drop your CV in...
