To be quite honest i think that ipod is just a rip off. I mean who really needs 20gb of storage. Also their small ones have no further capability than any other mp3 player and they are about $100 more expensive. I have a 1gb mp3 player that i picked up for $150 that was a apacer one. Ipods are about $250 tp $300 just for the nanos

If they are such a ripoff, why do soooo many people -choose- to buy them if there is cheaper better competition?

My iPod syncs with iTunes, which is a very nice and easy to use music management package.
It looks great and turns heads.
Its sooo easy to use, anyone can pick up click wheel operation in about 10 seconds.
I have a 60GB. 40GB of music, 10GB of video, and nearly ten left over for use as a portable USB drive.
I use my iPod in the car, and on the home theater, so all my music in one place with smart playlists (e.g. 5 star songs that arent rap/hiphop/reggae/pop/comedy/alternative/religious and hasnt been played in 5 days starting with the least often played)
1GB would not be any use to me other than a headphones portable player.
The amount and quality of accessories for iPod is enormous, the dock connecter is great.

Its the difference between getting a 700mhz Kmart PC for $800 and a decent machine for $1500 - i mean, who really -needs- 200GB of storage or a 3.0GHZ processor?

I love my iPod, but you dont have to

i guess you may be right there. its just something excessive i wouldn't use.

I have an excessive computer though.
3500+, 160gb storage, 1gb ram, radeon x700 graphics card.

So i can see where you are coming from

I have a 2800+ overclocked to match a 3500+, 1GB, 280GB, onboard video (i dont game).

What actual clock speed does a 3500+ run?

ipods have limitations yes, but they are rock solid in useability, slim, stylish, and they are obviously trendy. A much better fad than some of the rubbish beforehand.

Once you own one, you find it hard to live without, it's just like "I want to listen to this song" and pop... it's playing in a swift touch (on the clickwheel) no having to haul it back to PC and tether it up..

If having to use iTunes (it's a good app anyway but not overley multi-PC movable) is a problem for you (bloated) then I have self contained media library on my ipod itself, any pc i can just wack it in and add sonds to my collections.. Easy.

I've had in iRiver and while it's pretty much fantastic, it's also incredibly complicated and heavy and broke rather quick..

and I bought a shuffle a couple of months back, $116 was actually very good for an mp3 player i Thought, sure it's got no screen but unlike those nasty trademe rubbish* I know it works well and powers my sennheisers and panasonic headphones very good.

HOW many times have I seen numerous feature lists like FM radio recording, MP3 direct line in, etc and they say "option for STMP3520" etc

Why is the model for sale always the "not fully feature" models! no FM radio record.... No Line in, etc.

Though I did like the SD card expadibiliity and for $99 it isn't a "bad" buy
(the piles of 128 MB for $59 is though)

Yeah i agree with you there but don't they have moveable harddrives which are rather prone to breaking when dropped.

I bought a 1gb Apacer something rather that is really good. i treat it like crap because i take it to work and it still runs good. I have had no problems and it is easy to use. FM radio, FM record, Voice record etc... not bad for $160

I couldn't grow fond of itunes. it came in a pack with my version of quicktime. i quickly deleted it

Ipods are a "media library" not designed for rough use, they made shuffles for that.

Does the apacer record in mp3 or line in?
does it record in high quality ADPCM I have one called a gemei which records mp3 and 44KHZ wav or ADPCM wav and is fantastic, only prob is only 256 MB

My cheap-as-chips 2800+ is running stable at 2500mhz with nothing more than a bios setting change (dunno what it actually is, but the value was 166, now changed to 200), original clock speed was 2000 i think.

Also added a couple of SilenX brand fans into the mix to keep things cool.

I like iTunes but hate Quicktime, while a good player in it's own right it goes on about "upgrade to pro bla blah blah" and is bloated. I hacked it up a bit and installed itunes withouht the glut.

then there' always the naughty, "run a special file and your woes ara gone" way. it's forced on you just to use an iPod. but then Realplayer is far, far worse still.

like putting Shareware windows on a brand new PC.

I'm keen on overclocking but i am not willing to risk it as there is no way i could afford another computer.

Not sure on that but i think it records in a .wav file
