Questions, which DSE/Noel Leeming guys cant answer

1) It says it has "integrated wireless 802.11b/g software access point". How's this different to proper Access Points.. And does this mean I won't have to buy a WLAN USB adaptor for my PC? (WLAN:- I intend to put)

2) It also has a Vertical bay on the left, which HP say is used to put in External swappable HDD.. I have an external HDD with case, would I be able to put that in directly?

3) My PC is not in the same room as the RJ12 connection, so have a wire dangling to my ADSL router. To make things worse, my XboX is far away in the living. Can you advise on how to connect all together with the above "Software access point" in the PC.

Help urgent please!!!

Reading the specs it sounds as though it will be able to share your Internet connection directly - instead of having the modem - router - PC, you could have modem - PC and from this machine share your connection via wireless LAN at home.

I doubt the external drive will fit the bay. It probably is made to fit the HP models only.

If the cable doesn't get to your PC it will be harder to connect it. You might have to ask someone to put an extension for this phone line.

A 'proper' access point would have dedicated hardware and software in the device to do all the routing and NAT and other stuff. Yes it does mean you wont have to buy an adapter your the PC. I would tend to think that a seperate router would be a better option though, as you will -require- the pc to be on to let any other device have wireless access, not to mention the fact that it will be a drain on system resources, as your PC will effectivly be acting as a server.

Not sure. It would surprise me if you didnt have to buy HP accesories to make this happen. (Like an HP drive caddy of some sort)

Get a wireless router. Put it by your phone jack, then get wireless adapters for your devices, I recommend PCI instead of USB for your PC.

Urgency is that my wife happens to be a geek like us and I want to buy and set up e'thing for her Bday this weekend :)

Next question:-

If I buy a Wireless Router with some ethernet ports, like D-Link DI-524 (http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/446409e3093bb3322740c0a87f9906c4/Product/View/XH6311)

,connect my Xbox with the ethernet port and PCI card for PC, so I can stream my files from PC to Xbox=< would this work?

Hi, i may be able to answer your questions...

I have m7199a and it's great, although it's shame that NZ does not have EPG yet.

anyhow...

1) It has WLAN, and it also have a software-based AP, which you can use your MCE PC as your AP. I don't have my MCE PC running using WLAN nor i use it as AP as i have a dlink router di-524 with my cable modem. and I'd prefer have my MCE PC connected via LAN simply because it is faster than WLAN and more reliable too.

2) The vertical bay is for HP's Personal Media Bay, it is hard to comeby. I am looking for one too, as my HDD is 160GB and it is running short at 55GB free. I have 10 DVD images for use with "My Movies 2" and few recorded programmes and jukebox for music.

3) I'd be advice get a hardware router, to link with your ADSL, and use WIFI. in order for your xbox+extender or xbox360 to connect to MCE, you will need 802.11G not 802.11B...

Other thing is, MCE is in fact Windows XP Pro but it cannot join domain. there are some hack/tweak to get MCE to be part of domain, but I never try it and frankly won't bother.

Thanks heaps, Ended up buying a NEC7000K http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4467a58003db06782742c0a87f990717/Product/View/XC5649&2D19TFT (to fulfill our geekiness, it has 2GB RAM and 256 MB graphics) with a DSE 23" LCD TV/monitor

Wifey was more than happy :)

Also Bought Di-524 and a matching PCI wireless for my PC, but havent had time to configure it yet.

I am hoping after a I configure e'thing with my PC, I can leave the ADSL modem (RTA230) and the Wireless Router (DI-524) in a separate room, without connecting a PC to it. There's no compulsion that you have to connect a PC with this Wireless Router is it?

I found the HP helpdesk to be annoying when I called them to query abt that Bay .. After 15 min and keeping me on hold after every question, they couldnt give me the part number for the product to fit into that. I found it in DSE although, around $350 for 160GB HDD. Forgot the part name :(. I didnt think it was worth it, my external 160GB HDD will do just fine.

I found it in DSE Power house at Manukau, Auckland. Will call and ask them about the part number, cant open DSE.co.nz right now for some reason so cant check if they have it listed there or not.
