when is itunes in New Zealand going to be possible? It's taking so long isn't it? Is sonybmg holding us up on getting itunes because they can't come to a price for downloads? Itunes australia lanched initially without sonybmg. Itunes new zealand should do this dont you think?I see you can now download sonybmg and universal artists on digirama now.maybe itunes is coming to new zealand soon.

Forget iTunes try allofmp3.com although I have noticed that it has been out for a few days - 'closed for server maintenance'.

And Bishop Brian Tamaki is already the PM. Haven't you noticed he looks a lot like Helen Clark in drag?

I am sticking to buying real CDs that I can do whatever I want with, and buying digital music with DRM from the likes of http://amplifier.co.nz

There are also a large number of very good sites that offer mp3 downloads for free straight from the artist (not pirated), and often you will find a lot of very good music that isnt available through the big labels, and therefore not featured on radio stations, tv music shows etc etc, but which is often on a par with, or better than, major label music.

Theres a big world out there, and while itunes is a frikkin -brilliant- system, the content isnt the be all and end all of music as we know it.

You can buy music from digirama, coketunes etc, and use WMP to burn to CD, then simply import that CD into itunes... mp3 with no DRM - nice. But if its not a complete album, CDDB cant be used to automatically tag it for you, and you will have to put song name / artist in by hand.

For those who haven't read about it yet Aussie revealed their new copyright laws yesterday which legalise format shifting of music - ie you can now legally copy songs from a CD to your iPod and not break the law.

You can now also legally use a VCR, DVD or DVR to record TV shows but you will have to delete them after you've watched them once. This however is a step forward from the existing laws which make using such a device to record TV completely illegal! :-)

How could they possibly prove multiple viewings?

"Tony Hughes of Sydney, Australia, was this morning jailed for watching Tuesday nights episode of Coronation St twice. Mr Hughes' statement that he had missed some of the dialogue due to his own inattention whilst perusing technology website Geekzone.co.nz, held little water with the judge, who had no hesitation in incarcerating "this heinous villain" who was "the scourge of the repeat-watching criminal fraternity". After sentencing, Hughes said to reporters that if he could go back and unwatch the episode, he would, and that perhaps missing his favourite show whilst in the slammer would go some way towards an early parole.

If we do get the iTunes Music Store in New Zealand, it will be provided by Apple Australia. 'Apple New Zealand' is just an operating division of Renaissance and, whilst a New Zealand iTMS would have downstream benefits for Renaissance, their focus remains on product marketing and distribution.

It's quite clear that Apple originally had the intention of launching a New Zealand service in tandem with the Australian service because people were able to generate error messages and terms and conditions with references to the "New Zealand iTunes Music Store" back when speculation about the Australian store began about a year ago. Why the New Zealand store never eventuated is unknown, but failed negotiations to offer the service to New Zealand may have been a factor in the Australian launch being delayed until October last year, which is about six months after industry insiders suggested that it was intended to be launched.

Logistically, launching a New Zealand iTMS would be easy because it could reside on a server in Australia and share content and billing administration with the Australian store. On the other hand, if there is a lot of legal red tape involved in extending the service to us, then our market may simply be too small to justify that cost. In any case, the rumour mill has been very quiet lately so if we're ever going to get an iTunes Music Store, I can't imagine it happening in the near future.

I will never pay for a audio track that I in essence never own. All it takes is for a policy change at apple and a new version of itunes to be required and they strip away things you were able to do with the "purchased" songs. In 10 years time when the format is a distant memory as we have all moved on to other downloaded formats, the protected aac files will be worthless when the authentication servers are long gone.

I will consider the $9.95 monthly services, as they make it clear that there is no ownership of the materials downloaded.
