There arent exactly of lot of places you can legally download movies, let alone in NZ.

Bittorrent will be offering Warner Bros titles to download from sometime in the next few months. For more info

iTunes have a lot of TV shows so hopefully a NZ store starts up soon. I think the lack of legitimate avenues to download content such as movies and TV shows from the net is really sad. There would be huge revenue potential for legal downloads. I think most people would be willing to pay for high quality downloads and most would be less likely to share files they have paid for.

If i was given the opportunity to download the latest episode of TV shows and movies then i would ditch the slightly grey methods of obtaining entertainment in a heartbeat, also i would have to have nice highspeed internet

From the press release:

BitTorrent will provide the first peer-assisted technology platform to offer U.S. consumers legal content on both a video-on-demand (VOD) and electronic sell through (EST) basis, day-and-date with the DVD release.

Yes very stupid. But i guess with all the distribution agreements for other countries around the world its got to create some headaches if it was released worldwide.

But still theres no excuse to not have an excellent worldwide online content delivery system for movies, music, tv shows and software.

The movie/TV companies really do not get it. I agree that if I could pay for downloads I would. What I don't understand is why the movie studios keep protecting the theatres. I don't want to go to a theatre. By the time I arrange/pay a baby sitter, pay for parking, tickets and nibbles its a $100 night. I can't pause the movie if I need to go to the toilet. If the movie is long (King Kong) I again can't pause the movie and stretch my legs. At home I have a 42" Plasma and a really good surround sound system. It is comfortable and I can do what I want. I don't have to put up with cell phones and people talking during the movie and I can pause it when I want.

Theatres are a left over from a by gone era. They were created so that the masses could have a big screen movie experience. Well, this is the 21st century I have $10K worth of home theatre gear and I want to use it.

I can totally understand why people pirate movies.

I do know CinemaNow is the only one of the few that do PlayForSure movie download. it is not NZ based and I haven't try using the service at all.

For me, I buy PPV from TCL Saturn Digital PPV, and have it recorded on my MCE at the same time. And other time, I will rent DVD from BlockBuster etc, and image them onto MCE too. (then using My Movies 2 to playback)

Internet is my backyard...

I used CinemaNow before, but since then they have restricted customers outside the USA to access only the free (i.e. D type) movies.

I agree with Jama, and have the same situation. Even further I want to have a license that allows me to play the content on my Portable Media Center. Vongo does it, as CinemaNow and MovieLink, but again only in the USA...

Well the big promise from Annette Presley is VOD. Isn't that one of the points of ULL? I guess Annette is currently in negotiations with the movie studios - or not.

I remember when I first purchased a DVD player about 7 years ago. My local video store was parallel importing DVD's. This was great because the DVD's were often released at the same time as the movie appeared in cinemas. The movie companies complained so the government changed the NZ parallel importation laws to exclude movies. Good on them - not!

VOD without a DRM-enabled platform that allows time-shift or place-shift (with limits on number of playbacks or time limits) is useless.

Also, DVD import restrictions apply only to retail. Consumers can still purchase individual DVDs overseas.
