I know that our libraries in the South Wairarapa are signed up to a scheme for ebooks, but it has not yet been rolled out so I do not have much in the way of detail at this time.

Wellington library uses overdrive, which I know you can run on iPhone/Ipad, I'm not sure if it has kindle support though.

Overdrive claim Amazon support later this year. Whether this means that local libraries will would depend on likely demand.

It seems all the public libraries in NZ use overdrive and encrypted epubs.  And currently the kindle does not support these.

According to this blog post they will support it at some point in the future:
http://overdriveblogs.com/library/2011/04/20/kindle-library-lending-and-overdrive-what-it-means-for-libraries-and-schools/

But according to the compatiability page, its only going to be the US to start with and no definate date:
http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/incompatibledevices.aspx

It looks to me like all the libraries will have to offer encrypted epubs and encrypted .mobi for kindles, so it might even be a per library thing...
