I have an old Cowon D2 (hacked with D2+ firmware), and although it has a somewhat clunky UI in comparison to today's mp3 player offerings, the sound quality is second to none. That's why I still use it even though I have a smartphone with the same music playing capabilities.

In saying that, I really can't speak for the J3, although I would suspect the sound quality is probably at the usual Cowon excellence.
So, if sound quality is your main concern, you probably can't go wrong with the J3.

Yes I have a Cowon J3. Without doubt the best MP3 player I have owned. Great sound and interface. I listen to a lot of podcasts as well as music. It's perfect for these with bookmarks and variable speed playback. Very configurable, when I first got it, if there was anything I found annoying, I could always find a setting to fix it. Great battery life. Bluetooth. Can't comment on video playback. I have the 16GB model, quite expensive, I paid $US228 at B&H in New York on a trip there last August.

Another D2 hacked d2+ owner here. I've now maxed out the 8gb internal and 16gb external sd card storage and looking at an upgrade. I while back I was going to upgrade to the S9 but earthquakes got in the way of that idea. The J3 is what I'll get when the upgradeitis bug consumes the "Save money till EQC pays out" bug..

I've benchmarked my D2+ against my roxboxed Samsung galaxy S I9000 with the Wolfson DAC, voodoo control and the D2 still outstrips the Samsung for sound qualilty. And the Samsung blows an Ipod out the water.

The J3 sound quality will be at least equal to the D2+ (BBE / Jet Effect etc is brilliant) but the UI should be a whole lot more user friendly. Namkyu Park isn't known as "Golden Ears" for nothing. If you are after sound quality its unlikely you'll be disappointed with the J3.
