Hi Guys,

I'm almost 2 months here at new zealand holding a WHV visa. Currently Im still looking an opportunity here as Software Developer Java. I have more than 3yrs experience in IT (Java language with front end and back end). Now it makes me upset, because the opportunity(java) here has very low. Sometimes the seek site doesn't have new job post and sometime the recruiters have post a 1 job only or 1 client.

1. What should i do to cope with this struggle? and

2. Do you know where can i apply as developer?

3. And in your experience how long you get or take a job here?

I can also give you my github project for you able to see how or what style my coding is.

I don't understand why you cannot find work. You sound like you are doing the right things.

There is a huge IT skills shortage in NZ and employers and media are always shouting this out.

Seek alone has 204 jobs advertised, just in java. While I do understand that often 90% of listed jobs are duplicates / old / or a skills mismatch I'd still expect between 10 and 20 to be reasonable matches.

Good luck though, if you persevere you should eventually find something .

I don't think this is true any more (at least in Auckland). I've noticed that same trend, less advertised developer roles (not just Java) and more applicants in last months.

Just stats from our company:

- developer hires mid 2016 - applicants count around 30 per role in average

- developer hires early 2017 - applicants count around 100 per role in average

For sure, I just wish company executives and the media would just stop going on about our huge IT skills shortage. I feel it is partly a ruse to avoid the cost of training locals.

In Wellington Xero and others are always crying "skill shortage", and they're trying to bring people in from overseas. However when you contact Xero they're only interested if you fit exactly the profile for advertised jobs.

I'm not sure there's a skills shortage. I think employers just want exactly what they want, with no inclination to train or tolerate people that lack even one of the list of skills they'd like.

The be honest how your post / profile reads I'm not sure if you're a genuine person or a spammer looking to come back soon with a "I just got a job offer on this amazing XYZ website" post later on...

Assuming the former and/or for the possible benefit of others in a similar situation:

Given you're essentially asking someone for a job here it'd be prudent to pay particular attention to your post formatting, grammar etc. so as to give off a professional impression.
English is obviously not your first language; do what you can to improve that as it will increase your opportunities in NZ.
Consider getting some local "work" (intern, volunteer etc) experience / references with a startup or NGO to boost your CV.
Get out there, attend Meetups, industry / networking events etc.

If you are willing to share, I'd be happy to look at your CV and see if I can provide any specific feedback. I fairly regularly recruit for development roles (though I am not a recruitment agent), so would like to think I have at least some idea what I'm looking for.

It is proving difficult, from my perspective, to find good candidates - and the concept of a good candidate varies by role and requirement.

Thanks for your answers. Currently im living here at Wellington and i hope can get a job here despite of big competition here. Maybe after 6 months if i couldn't find a job will go back in our country .

You say you are here on a Working Holiday visa?

I think that would potentially limit your options, is it is only good for a year or two right?

Yeah my visa is WHV and its good dor 1 year.
Yep sometimes some employers or recruiters are automatically reject my application due to that my status. My plan is to apply a work visa once i have got the J.O.,,. If that is possible

It costs a lot of money to hire a person into a permanent role. I would never employ a WHV into a permanent role, as WHV is by definition temporary (and from memory there is a limitation on the amount of hours a WHV can actually work?) And 2-3 years of experience means probably not enough to take contract roles. When hiring contractors I want exactly what I need - no compromise, as I need a job done from day 1.

However, if I was you I would look into contract roles working on short-term contract engagements.

As mentioned above your short visa may restrict your options.

I work for an organisation who is at the forefront of what we do and are looking for a graduate developer to specialise in emerging UI technologies which could include Java amongst others.
