I'd imagine it to be fairly challenging, but far from impossible. 

It would largely depend on what area. 

Are you already tech savvy, a quick learner and interested in being paid peanuts until you have experience and reach a certain level. 

Yes actually I was thinking that in reality being a fast learner, being willing to put in a lot of hours (Because IT moves so quickly keeping up can be a full-time job on it's own).

I am not saying don't do it, but I do think it's worthy of careful consideration.

Picking a growth area like DBA or Analytics or Dev might be better than say IT Engineering etc. 

I know some exceptionally well paid DBA Consultants.

Coming from a completely different background.

Look at getting into things like Adobe Experience Manager analytics, google tag manager or salesforce.com (marketing or service cloud). You can stay out of the low-level plumbing and get into something a lot closer to the market. There's always good money for those willing to learn new software (even if google has been around for awhile), and while the money in coding is competitive, being someone who can help an org structure their digital channels and then perform analytics from it takes you into good money space.
