I've heard from two different sources that Spark in Wellington is laying off hundreds.

A Wellington contracting firm appears to be picking up some of Spark's help desk functions.

It's all hearsay.

If you're a low-level tech in Wellington, you may want to look at Christchurch or Auckland, which both seem to be good job markets.

For a little money, you could set up a "virtual office" in both cities to appear to be a local candidate.

This company has cheap prices

My anecdotal experience is that the big Telcos restructure every 2-3 years, and this rips the rug out from under staff morale.

A relative of mine works for the NZ branch of a 5000+ staff company and has just survived a restructuring round where most of her department were made redundant.  Even though that person was glad to keep their job, again it was a morale killer.

I survived a restructure in the late 90's after the NZ company I worked for was bought by an offshore corporate.  A week later I resigned as the company I loved working for suddenly felt pretty hollow.  The US-based exec who oversaw the restructure had to re-hire one of my dismissed colleagues.  I'm sure that would have been an interesting conversation...

Unfortunately defending your position every few years seems to be a theme with larger corporates.

So who are they going to hire to replace? Or are they shutting their shops or filling them with robots?

I can't speak to this one from a business angle, However in terms of front-line staff technical roles are normally a lot more north than Wellington...

Very different teams in that building, I have not heard of anything like this from my collogues down there though!
