My wife is trying to get into be a tester / analyst. She has a bit of experience in a bank who she worked for ten years with various roles. She has double major in commerce / psychology but no IT degree. She received very good feedbacks from her previous work but recommended that she does further studies to be an official role as a tester. Now after a three year of maternity leave she wants to get into it, and we have been looking at Industry Connect where she has been to an introductory class with positive interest.

We are based in Wellington and I just wanted to see if anybody has had an experience with them, and also to see if you have any advice that you would like to share with us. She wants to work as a contractor and likely a part time. She has very very good attention to detail and has good experience with working in banking software / environment but she is open to anything. She can return to the banks headquarters but wants something different in her life.

Thanks guys! Thought this would be the best place to ask.

I don't know much about Industry Connect.  I've had experience with Assurity, they are in Wellington and Auckland and their courses are excellent - agile testing, session based testing and others.  They also recruit junior testers to deploy to other companies, very supportive environment.   Also invest in the ISTQB (?) Foundation in Software testing qualification, a lot of jobs have that as a requirement or at least helps a lot to get past a HR gatekeeper.  I wouldn't pay a thousand+ for a course to pass it, just a book/course materials and do the test independently.

ISTQB would be a good go if you are looking for a foot in.

Personally i entered into the testing area from a BA role, so my niche is that i come from a totally different angle to most.

IMO, contracting in the area of testing is a rather steep entry.

It sounds boring but maybe return back to the bank HQ, get the ISTQB qual and push to be seconded or volunteered to any UAT testing or BA requirements gathering activities going on for more (paid) experience.  Always easier to get a new job when you already have one, then can sound more keen at interviews to move into new area because you really want to.

PlanIT is known for taking on people cross discipline with potential in testing and training them. Tends to be full time from what I heard but worth an ask.

Thank you very much everyone. We will check out Assurity but also trying to get into ISTQB testing sorted. My wife knew about it but didn’t know she could just study books and sit the exam. Truly grateful for the advice to every single one of you who replied.
