Hi All,

I am an employment consultant / coach working in the mental health sector. I am working with a client who has Aspergers Syndrome, he has recently left an internship where I believe he was rather taken advantage of because he worked unpaid for 2 years.

He seems very competent to me, I was a .Net developer and then team lead for 12 years before moving in to mental health, so I have at least some idea of what I'm talking about. He loves coding, does it at home a lot, and it working on a game demo at the moment.

Could anyone potentially point me in the direction of a company that might consider giving him a work trial? I am also able to offer my support to him and the employer for 1 year after he starts working, and I can arrange a subsidy through the MSD that would pay about 7k of his salary over 6 months to an employer for full time work.

Please feel free to contact me for a chat, and to see his CV etc. Thank you all!!! I really appreciate any help, this young man is a really smart, cool person, he's just shy and lacks confidence in social settings. If you hired him, he would ALWAYS show up on time, and always do his best on the job. He has never missed an appointment, been late, failed to do anything I asked him to do, or been in any way rude or difficult to work with. In fact, he's an incredibly kind sweet person, and I think this is why he's been so taken advantage of in the past. If you can help, please get in touch. Thanks again :)

What type of coding does he do/have skill in?  Also where is he (and I guess you) based?

Hi guys!

He is a full stack .Net dev, experience using SQL server mostly via LINQ I think, and ASP.NET/MVC. He's also decent with JS via JQuery and is most familiar with KendoUI.

thank you for any help!

I may have something, depending on developments next week. Could you please drop a message to m@rtin.kiwi? I'll forward to the appropriate people.

I am not in a position to offer him a position myself, but I could put some feelers out. What if any form of workplace support would he potentially need?

Hi Networkn,

I think what he would need in terms of support is just patience, a basic understanding of Aspergers Syndrome, and clear communication. He is very smart, it's easy to talk to him, but he sometimes takes a moment to formulate a response e.g. a few seconds. He might also need quiet or not-too-bright lighting, I'm actually not sure but I know he is very open to talking about his Aspergers. I also think that in his previous 'job' as an intern he was not really provided with any support, but he still diligently went to work and achieved results on his projects.

Thank you for considering this, I appreciate it!

Thanks Cyril.

To date, it's been challenging. No recruiter, or employer I directly approach has been willing or able to look at him. I think he would be a great asset to the right team! He's such a kind, caring person, and he's so smart! But not fantastic with social interactions, and this has really been a challenge for him. Regardless, he has stayed optimistic and positive, it's actually inspiring. Thanks again good people!

Is someone following up with his prior "employer". As best I can tell it would be an egregious breach of employment law.

ha! to put it simply; aint nobody got time for that.

I often have 40+ clients on my list at any point. Many of them have schizophrenia, bipolar, personality disorders etc. as well as depression and anxiety. All of my time is focused on helping them, but trust me I have heard some horror stories about people being used and abused.

It's great that you are looking out for them, a sad reality that (limited)studies have shown only ~1/5 hold full time employment iirc.

Someone definitely needs to follow up with the previous employer. @dejadeadnz would hopefully be able to recomend a good lawyer for such a case.

Everything I have heard about the employment court is that it tends to favor employees. To me, it seems crazy to not take a case against the old employer.

Sorry about not otherwise being able to help though. As I work in a completely different industry.
