Hey Geeks,

I've got a gold 32GB iPhone 5S that I'm thinking of selling in the next few months in advance of the 6S release, presumably before Christmas. My 5S has a smallish hairline crack on the bottom-left corner of the screen (see pic) and I'm wondering if it's worth having it repaired/replaced to maximise the resale potential. Rest of the phone is in good nick, a few very minor nicks predominantly around the cut-edge bezel around the device.

I've no idea what a replacement screen costs and presume there are different levels of workmanship/screen parts available.

Any thoughts on this?

I would say not worth it to sell. Even iPhones with serious faults seem to fetch silly money.

Have you spoken to apple about it?
From what I can tell reading through the apple visual mechanical inspection manual for iPhones/iPads (we recently became an Apple Authorised Service Provider), single hairline cracks like that may be covered by apple. If the device is not more than a couple of years old they may cover it under NZ consumer law.

If the device is not more than a couple of years old they may cover it under NZ consumer law.

Interesting idea, hadn't occurred to me to speak with them about it. Might give it a go, do you know if they have an NZ number or is it just email contact?

@CYABRO - I owe that man a beer or two... Went through the Apple "contact us" live chat, sent them the pic above and they arranged a ticket for me to go see The local authorized Apple agent. The agent tech gave it a look over and immediately advised that this type of crack (with no signs of other damage or impact) is considered a defect by Apple and so consumer law extends the warranty out to two years.

Backing up my phone this evening and bringing it in tomorrow to have it sent away. They say it will be replaced with a "new" phone, not a replacement screen, and that I should have it by the end of the week. New likely means refurb but I'm not complaining, that's for sure!

Just to close this thread out, I received my replacement iPhone 5S via Yoobee today. Very impressed with the whole process and the speed of turn around. The unit I received appears to be brand spanking new with no scratches on any of the surfaces (incl the sharp beveled cut edging which on the gold model is VERY susceptible to visible wear and tear).

Stoked with the outcome, great bit of info to know about the single hairline crack being considered by Apple to be a manufacturing defect.
