I have been quietly awaiting the new Ipad Pro 11"

to replace my original ipad pro from april 2016

So was pleased to see the new models announced to day until i spotted the price jump of $300 on the 128gb model

which is strange as american reviewers are saying same price as old model

So trying to decide do i just buy the recently deleted model as the improvement on my old one will be huge i hope.

I dont use the pencil or keyboard or edit video.

Did look at the other model announced today but prefer face id for unlock.

Any thoughts?

I'm happy with my M1 11" with brydge keyboard case. I don't use the pencil much even though I would like one but seems to be over priced for what it is. That replaced my 10.5 iPad pro which I handed down to my daughter. My aim is to actually get last years model on 1TB minimum storage and 16GB of RAM.

I suspect the pricing is just the effect of the terrible exchange rate.

This time a year ago we were at 72c to the dollar, now we're at 56c

Yip, the price jumps are all currency shifts,

even the poor old existing "gen 9" got a price bump,

So if you want one hunt out a dealer who might have some old stock and haven't updated their prices

They did also raise some of the prices. I think the entry ipad is now $100 US more.

Face ID on an ipad pro from my experience is not that great, as you have to be right in front of it. I would prefer it also had touch id. ipads pro IMO are getting too expensive, considering how restrictive they still are. If they allowed you to boot into Mac OS as well then maybe. But ipad os is still too restrictive.

They are pretty bananas now. $3700 for the 12.9 inch M2 pro (or $4k with cellular) with 1TB of storage, which I think still also gets you the 16gig of RAM. That's enough for a pretty sweet laptop or gaming PC.

I previously got the 1TB M1 pro on the strength of rumors that there would potentially be software coming that might allow more general-purpose computing. Those rumors turned out to be worth exactly what I paid for them. Still time though, I guess.

They have implemented a sort of crippled version of multi window support in ipad os 16 for newer ipad pros.  But that hasn't yet been released I don't think . Mac OS seems to look more ipad like, so I do wonder if it will eventually be brought across onto the ipads with M chips. Even windows 10 can be used on tablets and works with touch screens. I don't know how people can do things like video editing on an ipad by choice, over a laptop, unless you are doing really basic stuff.

I’ve never really seen the purpose of the iPad, especially as phones got bigger and bigger.

They will probably end up with a touch screen MBP that has a detachable screen. That would make more sense I think.

The iPad is literally a giant iPhone, so you’ve kinda answered your own question there. The differences really are minimal. Even the most ardent giant phone proponents would likely balk at the thought of an actual phone with an 11 or 13 inch screen size.
I think the way you use a tablet vs a laptop vs a phone (tiny tablet) vs a watch is actually different, so the UI does need to change to maximise the value of each. But there are convertible devices now (albeit not for Mac OS), and they’ve had limited market penetration.

I think iPads are good for kids to do schoolwork, and for elderly people who might not be comfortable using an iPhone and would find a laptop too complex for their needs.

Still very happy with my 2018 Ipad Pro 11inch and magic keyboard. There is no point for me until the screen update, which now looks like won't come to the 11inch.

If Apple make a Fold that combines the iPhone and iPad mini into one thing, I’ll be in there like a robber’s dog.

IMO the ipad is more of a giant ipod touch. Apple for example only allow an iphone to be paired with an Apple Watch, and not an ipad (not unless they have changed things), so an ipad is more crippled than an iphone.

If I was spending $4200 on a new ipad pro with max features, I would be annoyed that I need to then buy an iphone if I wan't to buy an apple watch, and I can't use my $4000 ipad to pair it with. I don't see any physical reason why an ipad couldn't be used.
