It's about what I was expecting, but I've been following the rumours. I'm surprised that there isn't a "secret feature" like Siri last year; I already knew the majority of what was announced.

I'm not the target audience obviously, and given the total lack of LTE support for the forseeable future in NZ, the only obvious advantage of this phone is a bigger display. Faster CPU? The 4S was hardly "slow".

LTE in NZ is a lot closer than you think.

Even if we put LTE aside.. this phone doesnt offer anything new or doesnt have any mind blowing features..

What "mind blowing features" are left to add to phones? Its been said by many that the hardware on modern smartphones has pretty much peaked. So IMHO it comes down to apps, os and whether you prefer a particular form factor over another.

For myself I prefer aluminium and glass over plastic, I already have many IOS apps and an ipad\apple tv and don't really have any need for NFC. I'm also a geek so tend to upgrade just because its in my genes. 3gs->4->4s->5

There won't be lots and lots of revolutions, sure, but there will always be incremental improvements of various sizes. One only has to look at Nokia's Pureview camera to see a "mind blowing feature" that represents a large leap over what everyone else is doing.

I have to be honest and say I expected a bit more from Apple this time, on both the hardware and software fronts. I was considering getting one to try, but I don't think I will buy now. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people wanting this iPhone or wanting to upgrade to it, but I think suggesting hardware has "peaked" smacks of apologism and is divorced from reality. I do think apps and ecosystem count for a lot though, and for people who have made their bed with Apple I think this offers enough.

I know an awful lot of people were waiting on this announcement to decide between an S3 and the iPhone, I'd love to see a breakdown of their impressions (although I doubt we'd ever see one). I expect the slightly disenchanted Apple loyalists who were waiting will be a bit disappointed but buy one anyway, but I expect many will opt for other phones. Would be unsurprised to see the S3 see a little sales spike in next little while.

All appearances indicate Lightning is USB2: http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=lightning. So far.

Maybe architecture will allow a future upgrade or cable hack. Teardown may reveal this.

Maybe memory Apple users are paying a premium is just too slow for the USB3 lol..

Those Nokias also include 'wireless charging', I don't think this has actually been put to the test in a review yet but still a cool feature.

I think there is plenty of space left in terms of power management in terms of hardware, charging everyday shouldn't be necessary, and a 'seamless' experience between phone, tablet, PC and TV from a software perspective.

I don't know but I wouldn't be the first person to say Apple launches are running out of steam.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

The main reason it matters having the latest version of ios, is because ios developers,especially for NZ made apps, tend to only allow the apps to install on devices that have the newer versions of ios. Maybe this is because they don't want to do the testing to see if they will work on older versions. I have however found that overseas apps, even the newest versions will run fine on older ios versions.

I think this is partly the reason the 3gs has got a crippled version of ios6, and previous versions too. As otherwise people buying what was still a current model of phone yesterday will have complained that their new phone isn't compatible with many apps. They seem to keep the phone models going a lot longer than ipod touches, as they probably want phone models to cater to different ends of the market. As a result they cease ios support for ipod touches earlier than they do for iphones.

My electric toothbrush has had wireless charging for years. That technology has been around for decades I think. I am surprised it isn't on more phones, although one downside is you need a special cradle or similar, whilst you can charge many phones with just a mini usb cable or basic adaptor.Although this downside probably works well for apple, as they like people buying extra things and charging a premium on them.

The biggest issue with wireless charging is that it is slow. You just can't pump as much energy wirelessly as you can with a cable.

What I would like them to focus on is battery technology. Once we get to a point where you can get 10x more capacity out of a battery that is 10x smaller - THAT is when smartphone technology will start to become seriously cool.

Like ajobbins I'd much rather see actual advances to battery technology, and in the interim I'll take devices with the largest capacities going.

Seems like Apple is a bit out of step in pushing the thinness angle here, if it had been ~8.7-9mm thick with all the extra space contributing to battery I'd have been much more tempted by this. Also, I have to laugh at their claim it's the thinnest smartphone out there, classic Apple.

I think that buying an iPhone isn't as 'cool' as it used to be either.

I saw an analogy in another review that likened buying an iPhone two or three years ago was a bit like getting a Fiat Abarth, edgy and different but now its more like opting for a Toyota Corolla.

I think wireless charging is one of those things that would be really cool if it worked like in the movies. Add it to the list of tech like this, it's a long list.

Yeah, battery tech needs to get better. Or to put it an other way, I want to use my phone for longer between charges. Particularly with LTE chewing power like it does, this needs to get better fast. Thing is battery life, in general, seems to be getting shorter.

Thin seems to be the way to keep phones over with over "4 screens 'pocketable'. It was part of the pitch I got for the S3.

Wider point was that there is plenty of room to 'wow' a consumer and the iPhone 5 isn't exactly making anybody go 'wow'.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

They like to compare themselves with themselves. So they may say that it is the thinnest 'iphone' ever. But I think the overall volume of the phone must make it one of the largest in volume due to the screen size increasing, but not reducing the top and bottom edges. But they are hardly going to mention that it is actually one of the largest :)

Regarding pricing, I noticed with the ipod touches, that they are going to be charging $600 for the 64 GB and about $450 for the 32GB. This seems to be more than the current generation, where the 32GB is normally $399 and the 64 is around $540.In the US they have said the pricing will remain the same. It looks like they are charging at least 10% more for this one over the previous generation in NZ. Yet the NZ dollar has been very strong for a long time, and storage prices have dropped a lot so that doesn't really make sense. Why there aren't higher storage capacity devices such as 128GB, is also strange, but I guess the competitions offerings are small to, although many do give the option to insert additional memory cards into them.

That is so true. I think there is now a momentum of people moving to andriod devices, where there are so many different varieties, so people have have more unique looking phone, while still having all the features of the iphone. Apple need to have features that are ahead of the competition. Not planing catchup, like they have for the last few generations of iphone. Otherwise they are going to become another myspace.

I'm not surprised that the new iPod Touch is more expensive, the current model has been around for 2 generations now, meaning it has become more cost effective to manufacture.
I'm surprised no one has got on the 'Why have they killed the Classic' bandwagon though...
Not that I want one whatsoever, but, well, I'm just a little taken back that no one has decided to whinge about it on here ;-)

Two features that I keep hearing people mention that the iphone may soon have, is a holographic keyboard, and a tactile feedback type of screen. I can't see them ever having those features, as it almost needs a huge leap in technology to get those things working reliabiliy at a consumer level and at an affordable price. But I think wireless charging is one area that could be done, but it probably doesn't really offer any improvements over is usability apart from the ability to make it a fully enclosed waterproof unit. But I guess then they would be able to dismiss warranty claims due to water damage if they created a fully enclosed phone.
