I see the Nexus Prime is slated for announcement next week, from a technology perspective it could begin to look like a one horse race :P

The ip4s will be a great phone in the same manner as the last model update of any given car is superior to the first release, but does ip4s bring enough to the table this time around?

I think retaining the 3.5" screen is the most fundamental flaw in this release, even stepping it up 0.3" would have sweetened the whole deal, 4" would have got every fanboi foaming lol

I thiink the reason this update has failed, and the stock price dropped, etc, is because they failed to meet expectations. The current glass backed iphone is now a bit dated, and it did have those design problems with reception and the back cracking, and it is easy to break being all glass. People expected the new design  to match the new ipad. People also expected a larger screen. Now the next  version will no doubt be called the iphone 6.
Got to admit that it is a vanilla update presented by a vanilla presenter. Wikipedia does confirm that it does have 1gb of ram.
The biggest disappointment for me is that the ipod touches have't been updated to the new A5 chips. I was thinking of getting one if they had, but now I will wait for the next update if it happens.

I can understand how retaining the existing form factor may have failed to excite those who were highly anticipating this launch. From a personal point of view, though, I'm mainly interested in whether this device will meet my needs as a solid workhorse to replace my ageing 3GS. I'm pretty confident that the answer is yes.

I am sure it will be a big improvement. the funny thing is that apple are still flogging off the old 3gs as a current model, even though I don't think they are providing future ios software updates for it. If they had changed teh form factor, I am sure they would have called it the iphone 5, which does make you wonder why they didn't update the form factor. I think the iphone 6 will come out in the first half of next year.

I think the next big hardware update will be a four inch screen and lte or some other '4g' tech. I don't think apple is ready for this so we get ip4.

I think the big thing around LTE at the moment is what frequency bands to support

According to Wiki* there are 5 proposed frequency bands for LTE, but I suspect over the next few years this may whittle down to 2 or 3, at that point handset manufacturers will likely jump in big time, but until then trying to build phones to do 5 band LTE + a few additional bands for 3G + GSM would just be a nightmare.

*There are planned 700 and 1700 MHz in North America; 900, 1800, 2600 MHz in Europe; 1800 and 2600 MHz in Asia; and 1800 MHz in Australia

But is your money better spent on something else?

I guess it's still a nice phone if you're into small screens

Personally I would wait, because I would expect an iphone 6 quite quickly now after this. The competitors have now got phones with better screens, and apple will need to catch up.

Screen schmeen... look at what else you get with an iPhone, it's not just the device you're paying for it's all the back end as well. If you're complaining about half an inch of screen real estate vs the app store, iTunes and iCloud and their interoperability over all your other iDevices, you're really missing the point.

I guess you have never used a SGS2 for a long period huh?  For some people (myself included) it is MUCH more important than itunes/icloud etc.

In the end, software is the most important thing on a Smartphone, in which case, I'll take the smaller iPhone screen anyday.

This is more along my way of thinking. I realise everyone will have their own must have features, but an extra half an inch of screen is by no means a deal maker\breaker for me.
