Dunnersfella: I'm not surprised that the new iPod Touch is more expensive, the current model has been around for 2 generations now, meaning it has become more cost effective to manufacture.
I'm surprised no one has got on the 'Why have they killed the Classic' bandwagon though...
Not that I want one whatsoever, but, well, I'm just a little taken back that no one has decided to whinge about it on here ;-)

I agree, but in the USA they are selling the new ipod touch for the same pricing as the previous one. The previous NZ pricing was struck when the NZ/US dollar was around 60-70 cents. Today it is at 82 cents so they must be making a big margin from the exchange rate.

The ipod classic is probably still there because it is their iconic product and the only one still with the click wheel. Altough I thought their older video nano with the click wheel was a better product. Don't know who is buying them, but perhaps they have a large amount of stock to get through. They are still good devices but technology has moved on. Although it is still the only product with over 100GB of storage. Put 160GB of flash storage on an ipod touch and I'll buy one.

The Classic is still showing as available for me...

Yeah it's still showing as available, but it wasn't listed in the launch when they summed up the iPod 'family'...
And yup, if a 128GB iTouch had been released I'd be buying one to live in the car for sure!

If it wasn't still going to be available, it wouldn't be on the US website. It is probably something that they no longer want to advertise though alongside the current new models, because it doesn't really fit into the current range of products in terms of the technology being used now. Even the screen on the classic uses older technology now.

Although not really a fair comparison, because they have better mobile rates overseas due to better competition and larger population. Better to compare the outright purchase cost to buy the handset without any plan to get a fair comparison.

iPhone 4S (now 16GB only) price drops to $899; iPhone 4 (now 8GB only) to $599".

Seems like standard iPhone pricing to me.

Edit: note the above doesn't include a plan, so naturally the price will drop if you get a contract etc.

Two features that I keep hearing people mention that the iphone may soon have, is a holographic keyboard, and a tactile feedback type of screen. I can't see them ever having those features, as it almost needs a huge leap in technology to get those things working reliabiliy at a consumer level and at an affordable price. But I think wireless charging is one area that could be done, but it probably doesn't really offer any improvements over is usability apart from the ability to make it a fully enclosed waterproof unit. But I guess then they would be able to dismiss warranty claims due to water damage if they created a fully enclosed phone.

I could see holographic keypads coming to tablets (in the first instance) as they're more a keypad-centric device. And the tech. is available off the retail shelf now so it's just a price point at the moment.

Tactile screens are still (I believe) a longer way from commercial, but this is a technology I'd expect first (commercially) on a phone handset. But really we'll probably first see both these in Windows slates, as there's a broad range of manufacturers moving to that space, all looking to differentiate their solutions.

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be getting better prices, I'm simply saying one should compare...ahem...apples with apples..

The claimed doubling of processor and graphics performance (different to speed) is significant.

Also the iPhone display has always been stunning compared to competitors and still winning there by a long margin.

In regards to whom? and in what respects?

I see a lot of reviewers gave the One-X display a higher score than the 4S in regards to clarity, sharpness, and viewing angle. There are also lot of people also prefer the AMOLED/SAMOLED displays in the Samsung devices
