I think it is interesting how the debate is framed in terms of half an inch of screen or processor speed from fast to just a bit faster. funny how we haven't seen a phone maker boast about battery life for ages nor have we heard complaints about this getting shorter as processing power goes up. phone makers framing the debate?

for me it is the most important leg of the screen/processor/memory/battery square.

hell apple is claiming lower battery life on this update.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I think most of us just live with the fact that smartphones only last a day if you actually use them for smartphone activities. I charge my phone at work as I use it as a wifi hotspot for my transformer.

Half an inch though is a big percentage on small screens. Battery life is largely restricted by technology, and I think they have reached a limit at the moment. This is one of the largest companies in the world, employing the brightest people, which is why I think the market is disappointed by what they have come out with.

3G internet browsing and talktime are up. Video and music playback times are the same, standby time and browsing over WiFi are down. Pretty balanced if you ask me, and probably the main reason they didn't bother with HSDPA+.

"half an inch of screen" sounds meaningless when you say it fast, but in reality, it means you've upped your screen area by 32%. I understand that 32% more screen area doesn't rate with you, but I have a feeling you are a minority here.

However, it really doesn't matter what the drawbacks may be if one is determined to justify one's choice - it's easy to claim that other less tangible properties are more important and there's no arguing against that.

I'm sure you'll be happy with your 4S. Enjoy.

yeah, I've heard it claimed nokia got better battery life due to symbian not needing powerful processing power to do the job. I've also heard both android and ios described as cut down desktop os's which both use more power than they should.

Actually if you'd been keeping up you would have read earlier I'm not that interested in it as an upgrade to my present 4. However, I was trying to suggest there is more to buying an iPhone than merely the size of its screen, or any of its hardware for that matter.

I also said that everyone would have their own hot points on whether or not it would be worth their while. No need to be smug.

I don't think that's true at all. Both iOS and Android are built for low power mobile devices. If Nokia devices use less battery power that's only because they can't do as much as other devices and have far less apps to keep people busy.

Regarding the screen size thing; a move from 3.5" to 4.0" would have been huge. The market is now moving towards larger screens as there is a high demand for them. I know I would never use a device with a smaller screen now that I have one with a 4.3" display.

I wasn't being smug - I was being sincere since, as you pointed out at the beginning of your reply, I hadn't "been keeping up". I responded to a specific post, one I quoted.

Also on the screen vs software/itunes/iOS, while you may claim its not the deciding factor, very few people will say the the 4" screen turned them off buying the device(SGS2 etc), while I'm betting nearly 50% of android buyers would say that iOS /itunes etc turned them off the iPhone....

Same goes for those that don't like the Android interface, etc, works both ways.

btw, i personally knew 3 friends (long term iphone user) and had waited for this announcement. 2 of them has gone to the store this afternoon to get sgs2.

A larger screen in the new phone would also have further reduced battery life.... If apple is wanting to stick closely with the form factor it's a tight trade for screen real-estate Vs battery-life Vs weight-gain.

It's my pick they'll be wanting to try and increase the screen area with minimal change to the form factor as it makes any screen growth look bigger on two levels. But perhaps more importantly, for any screen changes they're paddling in the litigation pool which not only contains the screen makers but also their handset competitors.

As smartphones mature so to do the patent wars. I think apple are using the 4s as an interim technology proving tool... a concept product, one that'll give them valuable insights into user experiences and expectations of dual-core products. It buys them time and data to develope their next-big-ifone-thing, which will meet and exceed the hype....

...which starts now.....
