Could someone from vodafone please shed some light on why New Zealand got shoved to the bottom of the iPhone 4S food chain? Aussies are getting it on launch day! What happened to the good old days where NZ got it first! (iPhone 3G launch).

This was an interesting read:

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/05/opinion-delayed-new-zealand-iphone-4s-launch-shows-the-perils-o/

And please vodafone, if it's not too much trouble, bring back $600 subsides on the smart 40 plan...

I feel the issue may be Siri. It has no NZ accent, and Siri is not mentioned on the Apple NZ website. Some say we not get it at all as the cost to make it for a small country is not worth it. That being the case, we could have it now, Siri-less. Or, this may be why we are delayed, maybe as we will get Siri, later when it's ready?

Be easier just to say.

In my opinion the shambles that were the iphone4 launch is what bumped us down the list. It's not a problem for apple to overlook a tiny market like ours just so teach some of us a lesson!

I don't think siri will have a problem with NZ accents, some are similar enough to Aussie!

How does Apple continue to get away with price fixing in NZ?

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I see in this morning papers a full page Vodafone ad for the iPhone4 Zero down and $150 / month over 24 moths.. but only until October 10. Are these people insane at that price.?? But I guess people will pay that for a fashion a now old accessory..

Yeah..nah...
You know with apple that it'll be a current model for a while (year or 2) yet, plus their penchant to make fairly minimalistic cosmetic changes means it will look like other models too, it simply doesn't date as fast as other brands.

As for the October date... VF may have stock to clear before something else happens... like...
- Launch of another product
- Their distribution agreement terms change
- Existing product is available through other channels
- Christmas is coming

I also read the tuaw article by Chris Rawson.

I think he is right that it is a Vodafone issue. Essentially I think Apple probably wants more subsidy for their phones than Vodafone wants to provide.

I will be interested to see whether Telecom (2 degrees is unlikely as they aren't looking at this part of the market) finally gets the iphone as this might force Vodafones hand.

You will have all noted that Gen-i now has the government contract for Apple devices, so they have been talking at some level.

Given the amount of competition here now, there is unlikely to be much change in the subsidy.

Also my 2c on the screen size issue:

I think a bigger screen is better for your eyes but I think Apple set the current screen size for usability, ie. the average length of people's fingers. I often operate my iphone one handed, and think the extra half inch would probably curtail that UX somewhat especially now that I have to swipe down from the top for notifications.

Also I barely use my iphone for apps now, I generally use my ipad. My greatest use of my iphone is for email/messaging/calling/photos and my ipod.

It would be interesting if Telecom did a zero down and $100 / month on the 4S if they could get it as they have down with the SGS2 and HTC Incredible..

On screen size I read an article recently where 4 inch was compared to 3.5 from a one handed use point of view and the 3.5 came out on top. I can see the point of bigger screens but for me I prefer the 3.5 as I like to not use two hands with my device and I want it to fit in my pocket.

Some of the bigger screen phones just look to big IMHO.

I think the 4S has everything but a new form factor and I dont really understand why everyone is so hung up the fact that its look hasnt changed. Its faster, has a better camera and new updated software with new features.

Also alot of the haters seem to be people who were never going to buy an apple device no matter what they did. Just saying.

From my perspective nobody is really hating on the ip4s, and if it had been rolled out as a running upgrade without all the secrecy and fanfare uptake would have been a lot more encouraging and positive.

I think people's issues relate to Apple releasing a new phone maybe once a year and now having to wait another year to get the phone they wanted and thought was being announced this week

This loosely disguised upgrade is all about securing larger chunks of the American market. They are not so worried about existing customers as attracting new ones. They needed to go A5 and 8MP components just to keep up with the norm and it probably comes in at little to no additional cost over A4 and 5MP components

MikeyPI: Also on the screen vs software/itunes/iOS, while you may claim its not the deciding factor, very few people will say the the 4" screen turned them off buying the device(SGS2 etc), while I'm betting nearly 50% of android buyers would say that iOS /itunes etc turned them off the iPhone....

Same goes for those that don't like the Android interface, etc, works both ways.

Purchase what ticks your boxes, as always, plenty of choices.

Really? Most iPhone buyers do so because they dont like the Android interface? I dont think so... I would hazard a guess that 90% of iPhone buyers havent even considered another OS..

I could understand if it was about Android supporting software ie Kies (that POS) but there are so many different versions & skins of Android, I dont think that arguement carries much weight.

What lesson is that? To get a** r*ped by Apple and enjoy it?  For all the hate on VFNZ, Im yet to see Telecom or XT fork out the $$$ to become an official supplier... And we all know its down to the bottom line....

That wasnt an interesting read at all.. Full of speculation and zero fact...

More likely Apple wanted 100% of handset revenue, and VFNZ baulked at that, or that Apple severly under-supplied the market and VFNZ had a spaz....

The least likely scenario is that Apple wanted the subsidies higher, that just devalues the brand, not something Apple is fond of!!!

So I'm highly contemplating to import one from Australia by my friend. I can't wait till December. Is it a good/bad idea?
