alasta:
I wasn't able to order at 7pm as I was busy, so I've just ordered mine now and still got a delivery date of 22 September. It looks like they must have a reasonable amount of inventory.
Probably more early adopters are holding out for the X.

I suspect there will be more than a few disappointed iPhone users. Particularly those who have been purposely holding off upgrading while patiently waiting for something new with the 10-year anniversary model - only to see the 'X' priced too high for them, with the next tier down iPhone 8s still priced well over $1,000
You nailed it. I'm definitely one of those disappointed users.
I'm still running a 6 though which is getting a bit sluggish on the iOS11 GM, so I'm thinking I'll upgrade to the 8+ (need to test our game on the big screen) which means I get access to the super fast chips sooner than waiting for the X, and should be able to use it with plenty of speed and responsiveness for 2-3 years before upgrading again. Speed and snappiness is most important for me in my work.
Anyway, I wanted to crowd source some knowledge: I worked out if I order the unlocked phone from the USA and send it through YouShop - even after shipping and GST I still save more than $160. Anyone have any thoughts around this? I guess I lose warranty... but I don't know if that's worth $160 alone.

So, just as an explanation for some people who wonder why we upgrade, I ordered an 8+ last night. I resigned my 2 year contract (after checking deals & plans with other providers) and got $600 off the phone making it $849. I've also just sold my 2 year old 6S+ to a friend for $500 meaning the new phone cost me $349. And yep I factored in the 2 year contract etc. etc. but I would have been paying for that anyway as it gives me everything I want.
I could have waited for the X, but I'm not convinced that this isn't going to have some problems in the first 6-12 months so I'd rather wait until the XI or XS or X+ comes out. In the past I've always bought the S model so that bugs had generally been ironed out.
I'd been seriously toying with the new Samsung as it looks great and I liked a few of the features, but it would have been just one more thing to have to learn and adjust to so I couldn't be bothered.
Looking forward to next Friday when I get the new 8+
Yep, that's something a lot of people forget about Apple products. Resale value.
Earlier this year I upgraded from a 2013 Macbook Pro 15-inch Retina with 16GB ram which remained lighting fast no matter what I threw at it (which as a full-stack game developer, is a lot). I had purchased it for $3k soon after it came out (granted the NZ currency was doing much better back then), and I sold it for $1800 on TradeMe when I upgraded this year. So effectively it cost me $1200 to own a top-of-the line retina MPB for 3+ years.
The ratios might not come out as well with the new iPhones, but it's still a significant factor.
dickytim: Delivery still 22nd for 256gb 8+ black.
Either supply is really good this year or demand is lower with a lot waiting for the X
I will say its the people waiting for the X. I expect a flood of iphone next month as people drive to get money towards the X, if you get 1000 for your iphone 7+ then the x is only another 1k

dickytim: The price for 7+ 128gb seems to be closer to $8-900
Did you have to pay an early resign fee to start the 24 months again?

So disappointed in the iphone 8. Galaxy S8 is a much better phone in most ways.
