I have one of the $549 refurbs (?) coming from Apple also. I'll also update here regarding the packaging. I did hear a rumour that they were using it as a channel to offload 'new' stock of the third gen, but we'll see :)

Expecting to see it today or tomorrow.

Mine shipped last night. Since it sat unmoved all weekend after I ordered Saturday morning, I assumed it was coming from Sydney, but it shipped very late last night from China. Not sure if that points to it being surplus stock or a true refurb. Anyway, it's in Hong Kong waiting for a flight to NZ now.

I ordered a "refurb" WiFi/Cellular 16Gb from Apple NZ on the day they announced the 4th gen.  Got it yesterday, comes in a white iPad box but not sure it's the full retail one (no image of the iPad on it?  Just text?)
Looks pristine, runs mint, couldn't say if it's new or not but can't tell the difference here!

I had guessed they might start offloading iPad 3s and had checked the refurb store the day before the 4th gen was announced - there were basically no 3rd Gen cellular models on there at all.  Next day, every single model available...

Hmmm, the plain box would suggest it's a refurb. Apparently sometimes the serial numbers are a giveaway. If you Google it there's lots of different suggestions out there as to how to tell if yours is brand new or not. Though, in the eyes of Apple it's as good as new. They replace the shell so it'll be free of the cosmetic damage they warn of with a refurbed item.

Interesting though that there was very little stock in the Apple store until the 4 launched.

I'm quite shocked that my order is listed by TNT as delivering next Monday. That's a full week from shipping. My iPhone only took 4 days, and one of those was it driving around Auckland in a courier van and not getting delivered.

Edited to add: Just got a text from Apple saying it had shipped and I'd have it by the 1st. I hope they're the more accurate estimate! Meanwhile, my iPad still sits in Hong Kong...

My refurbed 3 arrived today. It was in a plain white box with "Apple Certified Refurbished" on the front. It's pristine, you wouldn't know it isn't new. And to be honest, I am wondering if they are sending out the surplus stock in those boxes because they were advertised as such. Either way, I am happy with my purchase so far. Have yet to use it but I am sure it'll be a massive step up from the 1!

They say a new back on refurb iPads but what about the screen? Could it have scratches on it?

Mine certainly doesn't. I don't think they'd send something out with a scratched screen - that's a much more serious flaw than a minor mark on the casing.

Price of iPad 3 is down to $599 for the 16GB at DSE.
I bought a black one today :)

These are new - sealed in box.
